I've noticed that DJs tend to play much longer sets in NA, which may be because the clubs stay open for so long. In the UK it's got to the point where 3 hours is called an "extended set" and is hyped on the flyer. You almost never hear a DJ play for 4+ hours. |
The club stays open way past last call. Usually, places like that don't serve liquor at all during the night. I know that in places like Stereo and Circus, international DJ's sometimes take the reins for a good 6+ hours. Nothing like a good ol' fashioned Cattaneo journey.
Anyways, I don't live in MTL, haven't been to either yet, (Yeah I'm a tard) so can't comment on anything more than what I said. But, I used to frequent the infamous Comfort Zone in TO, and there'd be plenty of "surprise" visits by international DJ's who played at a different club the night (well morning of) before. They'd usually roll by at like 1-2PM and play a set, then leave to catch their flight or something :haha:
That being said, we like to complain living in such a big city, but honestly we have one of the best club scenes in North America. There's a plethora of international DJ's to choose from every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night at various clubs around the city. Granted, one thing that IS lacking in this city is proper sound at clubs, but it's getting better now with the recent installation at the BLK BOX Theater. Hopefully club owners will take the cue and realize patrons like myself want to hear more than just the rumbling of overworked subs. Not likely though. |

How would you say the sound system is in the main room at the Guvernment? |

There are a bunch of decent clubs about an hours drive away from me, and a bunch of awesome clubs two hours drive away. Cant complain really.
My favourite is still
Its the daddy of the clubbing scene here, and has been for ages. I think i was 14 the first time i went there. Ah, the good old times. |

I haven't been there in about a year and a half... but it definitely isn't as great as everyone says it is.
Didn't you use to live in Toronto at one time? Sorry if I'm wrong but just something I remember seeing when I was lurking lol |

I believe he's making fun of you because most of us would kill to be in a place nearly as awesome. You said in the other thread you went to see Hybrid as if it were something normal.. if Hybrid came here, my post would've started with something like "After quitting my job and making sure nothing stopped me from enjoying this once in a lifetime opportunity, I camped in front of a nightclub and..." :p |
Ha, it's the second time I've seen them in 2013. Only went as a last second decision, glad I did though as it was a great night. |

I live in the Netherlands, so I can't complain really. Almost everything happens in Amsterdam which is a one hour drive for me. Occasionally I go to Rotterdam, Utrecht or Antwerp (Belgium), all in less than an hour. A lot of people I know think it's crazy that I drive an hour to go clubbing.. ignorant s :toothless
Almost every club has a Funktion One or similar sound system. Closing times are between 4 and 6 am. Only Trouw, my favorite club, recently got a 24hour license. Very soon they'll host their first weekend 'Berghain-style', i.e. staying open from Saturday until sometime on Monday. |

I've never lived in Toronto but I used to go to the Guvernment fairly often when I was in school. |

I live in Leeds. It's an hour on the train to Manchester. I put it to TA that the only places I could live in the world with a better choice of clubbing would be London, Berlin, possibly NYC and Ibiza if I were cheating.
But what's it like where you live? |
Leeds is definitely one of the better places I've been out Music wise!
Lived in Gloucester last few years and it was all cheese :(
Have now moved to Colerne now and its no different!
Stick to the north unless your in London! |

One of the peculiarities about the United States is that each state and county have their own rules. In Seattle, every bar and club has to be closed by 02:00, or they risk getting their liquor licences revoked or huge fines. Most do last call somewhere between 1:30-1:45, and then force everyone out around 1:55. That's a State of Washington law, Seattle has actually tried to fight it several times, to no avail. It works differently in, say, New York City, where they can be open till 04:00.
The few times I've seen international DJs, they've come on around 00:00 and played until right around 02:00.
Things are slowly getting better where I live. A few weeks ago, one of the main promotion companies brought out J00F and Lawrence, though I was busy that night, unfortunately. Mostly we just have ty top 40 clubs or the awful pop-dance sweeping the nation, though there are a number of more underground clubs that many people don't know about that will have better deep house or eclectic nights. |

There's a number of fairly decent clubs here, but they very rarely attract anyone notable mostly because of their relatively small size. The resident DJs are pretty talented, but other than that, we just get huge college crowd parties at the Main St. Armory with people like Avicii, Sander van Doorn, Bassnectar, Afrojack, etc. I avoid those like the plague.
The nice thing is that we're only a 2 hour drive from Toronto, which has an awesome club scene and a ton of great local DJs. I'm a huge fan of Carlo Lio, although he doesn't play there nearly as often as he used to. |

Regular clubs open at 10 PM and close at 3 PM (last call). Afterhours (completely different venue where no alcohol is served) open at 2 AM and close...whenever (usually until the DJ wants to stop playing). A local usually opens for the headliner, then the headliner gets on the decks until morning, sometimes afternoon. Danny Tenaglia used to play 12-14 hour sets. :wtf:
There was bar called Stereobar underneath Stereo afterhours that opened at 9 AM, where all the alcoholics and hardcore party animals used to go to have some beer for breakfast. Stereobar used to close at 5 or 6 PM.
Jay, ARIA was amazing. I don't remember if you were at the closing party, but walking up those stairs in the morning after the party was over knowing we'll never go back was heartbreaking, we all wanted to cry lol. :/ |
