Coping with the Realization that You're Smarter than Your Parents

By now I'm sure this has happened or must be happening to a number of you here in the COR. You'll be in mid-conversation with one of your parents, or older relatives and realize that there are certain things you just can't bring up, because it's simply over their heads.
What's more, is when the realization is mutual. I've been experiencing this with my mom (who's about 55 with a Master's degree), and thankfully to a lesser extent with dad. A lot of their views and opinions are gradually seeming more and more conservative, they're almost quaint. Guess I just always thought we'd be on the same page, more or less.
Anyone have similar experiences with their relatives? |

When Obama and Clinton were running for president, for example, my great aunt went on this spiel about how there are just certain things a woman should never be allowed to do
like flying an airplane, being a police officer, being the president of a country etc. |

| Them having different view than you is not the same as you being smarter. |

I'd hate to talk to someone who thinks they are smarter than others. I'd also hate to talk to someone who thinks having conservative views makes a person unintelligent.
tl;dr You are a pretentious douche.

Not a conservative here, but I think you just equated "being smarter" with "not being conservative". |

too bad your parents will school you when it comes to experience. If you think you know more than a guy whos been on this earth for 60 somewhat years, you're in kidding yourself. You may know more about certain subjects, but he will kick your ass in others and in life in general.
Always have respect for your elders |

| I'm not sure I've ever met anyone smarter than me. Or, for that matter, dumber. We did have different skills, interests, and beliefs though. |

| Yeah, if my dad was still alive I really don't think I would be smarter than him. Same with my mom - had mental illness and whatever else not ravaged her mind, I would never EVER be smarter than her. |
