even though i somehow was let on stage during suzy solar's set and stayed there the rest of the night, i thought this show and club was complete . i took notes on my phone and here's what i wrote word for word (i do this when i write my regular reviews... please excuse the drunken typos and what not):
"i can see why a night called trance has turned to instead of representing something meaningful. young kids lined up. club opens with ladder in the middle of dance floorand guy ing around with an extension cord. the special was pinnacle vodka for $3. beers are $5 and up and most things on drink menu are 8/9/10. when you label something trance, mix it with teeny boppers, you get a true fan who's aggravated and disappointed. what's up with the old chadaliers? the first dj showed me how edm has evolved into a butchered and slaughtered horse while still having kids want to ride it. felt like i was observer sitting on top of a box looking down at the idiots. first impression is horrible. good news it's bigger than the amp and more spacious, bad news is that's not saying much considering the amp blows balls too. girl in line said to me "theyre's so many young molly kids here, maybe we should leave." her friend said, "yea but itll be the same at the amp too." this describes tampa's scene pretty much. non existent. lasers were good and probably the highlight of the night. hmmm those jeans with crosses bleached into them are interesting... wtf. will do better than amp because of space and location. couches and sitting areas scattered throughout. spacey. trance finally comes on and crowd stops dancing. its flowing and im forcing to like this since i paid to park and enter this hole. atillas is one cool mofo. i didnt know suzy solar was even playing a set because of high the stage and decks were and how short she is. she had to walk around to acknowledge the crowd a few times to realize it was her playing. on stage. bouncer let me through because i told him i liked suzy solar's track from creamfields and wanted to get a photo. got a few cool photos with her and antillas. chilled on stage the rest of the night watching antillas rock it. the lasers and how cool suzy and antillas were def the highlight of the night. club blows balls and so do these young kids who know nothing of this music beside tank tops, molly and orange framed sunglasses. will not come back."
again, this is usually spare of the moment i do when im reviewing places. ei clubs restaurants etc. i would normally take this and what i remember and mold it into a real review but i dont care to considering how much i thought this club sucked. |

thanks :D i havent been out in a while (besides last week at hyde park cafe which was SO MUCH better than last night - crowd and music included), but it's definitely discouraging to see the state of the scene here. i wanted to see pvd at the amp on the 10th but im sorry to say i think im going to pass after last night's experience. i just cant have fun when im surrounded by the kiddies. idk whether im being an old cynic or it's really just sad. oh well. hanging out on stage saved my night. still feel i wasted my money though. |

In the most non offensive way, I think you are being an old cynic that is prejudging kids being kids. I see some good in your review and think you actually would have had fun if you removed the negative thoughts about others from your mind. You'd be surprised at how smart some of the weird looking kids are. That being said, I'm happy you got to get on stage, especially by dropping Suzy's name and Creamfields. That is awesome and Im really glad it worked and got you access. Im also happy you enjoyed meeting Suzy and Antillas. It's surprising that you felt like you wasted money, when you got a front row seat to see and hear 3 hours of trance in Tampa from Suzy and Antillas. Also, take into consideration it was the 1st night. The room is large, it sounded good, the lasers were a cool touch, seating was available, there were no stage nazi's giving you a hard time, clean bathrooms... I've seen thousand times worse.
If you have a change of heart and want to attend a future event at this club, as long as Suzy is a part of it, let me know and I will make sure you have a backstage pass. This way you'll have a little distance from the young kids |

i think i was referencing my steep bar tab a bit more with that statement lol. i was actually happy that the prices at the door were the same as online (even cheaper considering no service charge). i paid 10 for parking though in the lot across the street when i couldve easily parked right outside the club on the street. i was there super early and finding that out minutes after i forked out the 10 kinda started my night off in the wrong foot.
like i said, being able to meet them and hang out on stage made my night. three hours of trance is a bit of a stretch though :o just because i got to meet them hang out doesnt mean im not going to be objective. i didnt think they played their best sets tbh. there were some banging moments though, ill give you that.

I understand the kids are the ones paying the bills. But the thing is they won't pay ENOUGH of the bills where you will be successful. A huge reason why tech-house and techno are becoming so popular is because those promoters and venues gear towards an older crowd. Trance does the exact opposite. You have events where there's "kandi" everywhere and stupid glow-up and "RAGE" hats; you shouldn't be wondering why older people don't wanna be there. The music and sounds lately are geared towards little kids whom no one wants to hang out with on a Friday or Saturday night. Music is important but the environment and vibe of a place is more important. Find it humorous that the promoter of this event is on this thread telling us that us "old and cynical" folk just don't fit in with the younger crowd and that's just how it is. Wrong. Promoters and venues work as a team to define a night and its concept and vibe. It's the way that it is because promoters don't know any better.
Maybe trance promoters (since every event that isn't headlined by AvB/Schulz/Corsten/PVD is an utter failure in terms of revenue) should take a hint and start throwing parties aimed at people a little older than they're used to. Then again I guess the entire trance music world should do the same as well. And here's a hint: huge warehousey ugly places are always gonna be a ty time unless you truly have enough people to fill it out. Why not have some REAL trance music in a cool smaller club? Just thinking aloud here... |

"I understand the kids are the ones paying the bills. But the thing is they won't pay ENOUGH of the bills where you will be successful."
Organizer's of events like this usually make money from the ticket sales, not the bar. There were 600 people through the door for this opening night and tickets started at $15.
"A huge reason why tech-house and techno are becoming so popular is because those promoters and venues gear towards an older crowd."
Tech house and techno have been a staple in this town since the 90's, ie DJ Three, Brian Busto, Chang, Matty, Monk, Muggles etc. The reason it caters to an older crowd here is due to it being around for as long as it has. I was partying with the above names to that music dating back to 95. They have a tight knit group who have kept at it and now it's 18yrs later. They all matured from rave kids, into what you see now as a older more mature crowd.
Trance does the exact opposite. You have events where there's "kandi" everywhere and stupid glow-up and "RAGE" hats;
If you look at an old scene magazine from this area or take a look at the art work inside the Album of Rabbit in the Moon' Florida, you will see many of your tech house and techno idols looking like cracked out ravers too. They were all kids once as well. Now days, we all look back, laugh and say, those were the days (Simons, Soulhouse, Silver Meteor, etc).
"Find it humorous that the promoter of this event is on this thread telling us that us "old and cynical" folk just don't fit in with the younger crowd and that's just how it is. Wrong."
If you are referring to me as a promoter, you are mistaken. I am a long time clubber from this area who works directly in the Trance music scene doing bookings, public relations, DJing and tour management. My views are my opinion based on what I have learned from almost 2 decades clubbing both locally and in many different countries around the world.
"Maybe trance promoters (since every event that isn't headlined by AvB/Schulz/Corsten/PVD is an utter failure in terms of revenue) should take a hint and start throwing parties aimed at people a little older than they're used to. Then again I guess the entire trance music world should do the same as well."
This events opening night had over 600 people through the door. I would say it was far from an utter failure in terms of revenue. As far as aiming it at older people, I am 37. Our crew has many people older than me and not by months, years. Maybe we Look younger than we are, but some in my circle are Grandparents!
"And here's a hint: huge warehousey ugly places are always gonna be a ty time unless you truly have enough people to fill it out."
To me, life is what you make it. I dont need a place to be packed to enjoy myself. Here's a hint, stop judging books by covers and looking down on people you don't know.
"Why not have some REAL trance music in a cool smaller club? Just thinking aloud here..."
Its been done before. Suzy's played Trance at your favorite venue, HPC. |
