| The Neon Garden stage was super bad ass yesterday! I arrived in the park at 430 just before Cassy came on. Cassy,Paco,Hawtin were very good!:crazy: The only thing I didn't like was paying $20 for parking fuk lol. Heard attendance was 30k yesterday. Overall good time and very nice vibe.. |

Great time yesterday. No line, straight to neon garden and there was a nice small crowd. Bathrooms right around the for corner with no lines and actually had a cpl guys with a cooler selling beer literally next to where we were standing. Didnt even have to move. I had a great time much more fun than I would have expected. Happy after going last year on sat and having a terrible time that i actually bit the bullet and went

was really ing dope on Friday. The Neon Garden stage was sick. It was like a smaller, scaled-down Carl Cox tent from Ultra. First time seeing Gaiser and he was impressive. You can tell he is a protege of Richie Hawtin. As for Richie himself -- words cannot do it justice. Was a proper banging festival set, just the way I like it. Insomniac is really pumping money into this event now. Looking forward to future editions, as a Tampa/Orlando resident, this is the best thing going in our area. BUTTTT...I thought the audio was out-of-tune. Low freqs were overpowering -- the dreaded muffler sound was present. Especially annoying considering the style of music...you need to have a dynamic range with clarity to enjoy this music to its fullest potential. Please fix this for next year...at $90+ for a single day ticket, sound had better be on point.
But still had a blast. Yes, it is expensive for 6 hours or so of quality music, but I happen to love a good festival atmosphere, it's a more worthwhile experience than 95% of club nights. Was home and in bed by 2:30 am, woke up and went to tailgate and then to see UCF notch its most important win in school history. Damn good weekend. |

EDC did such a better job this year than last. Did both days and each day was on point. Was at Neon Garden for 95% (obviously) and agree with the sound being too bass heavy on Friday. Don't know what they did to tweak it because the sound on Saturday was crystal clear. Anyone who didn't attend Saturday missed the best set if the festival: Art Department. The boys absolutely slayed that stage with mind bending, twisted, deep tech and deep house. A proper bangin festival set....amaze balls. Damian Lazarus dropped several massive tracks as well as he's a guaranteed great show everytime out. Even Jamie Jones played some bangers along with some deep groovy acid house.
On Friday, Hawtin was Hawtin... But I guess I expected too much from him based on some past shows I've been to of his. His tracks are so bassline heavy and the system on Friday wasn't ready for him. Third time for me seeing Gaiser and I thought he had the 2nd best set of the weekend. He bangs it hard every single time. Liked him better than Hawtin this time. Paco was Ok, never really been into his sound even though I do love tech.
All in all great time.... Soooo many candy ravers though! Lol |

A MEGA Review and Discussion of the Festival Scene here.
First, I want to say I am not trolling and bagging on the newest generation of EDM'ers. I don't want this thread to turn into that. I do want to discuss the current direction of the festival scene as it relates to EDM, and the direction of the music being played. In fact, myself being older, I get a kick out of seeing this current new generation enjoying music the way I have for so many years. However, what when down musically on Saturday night has me perplexed... I would love to have some intelligent discussion on the matter.
First and foremost, me and my wife left Saturday just saying, "we may have just come on the wrong night". Unfortunately, we couldn't make Friday. So someone who attended Friday, please also lend insight.
Some history and background on me: I attended every Ultra Music Festival in Miami, up until 2005. They were incredible. I have still kept tabs on the scene but starting a family limited my ability to attend festivals. However, I have always managed to take in a few shows a year when guys I grew up listening to come to town Van Dyk, Tiesto, AVB, Corsten, Schulz, A&B, Lange, John O'cal, Sasha, Digweed, Solar Stone, etc... I like "true trance": Tunes that are airy, full of energy, uplifting and make you smile with your hands up, with melody, rhythm, bass lines, buildups, incredible drops and lift offs, and that you can actually dance and groove to.
Me an my wife attended EDC Orlando 2012 last year on Saturday. Between AVB (2hours), Morgan Page, Tritonal, Wippenberg, and Hook and Sling we had plenty of opportunity to get our groove on and we had an absolute blast, vowing to go back again this year!
So we ended up attending EDC Orlando 2013 on Saturday. Last year's lines getting in were a mess. This year, it took all of 10 minutes to enter the grounds! Fantastic! We stopped off at the Neon Garden, because it was first in line and the sounds coming from stage sounded wonderful. Have had no experience with Atnarko or Sleazy Mcqueen, but they were phenomenal! True pros. Playing A "TRUE SET" Kind of housey, funky, with some great elements and vibe. Not much of a crowd but it was a perfect start musically with some great grooves.
Next up Digweed. The dude is a legend and still plays like it. Of course it was on the housey side, and the sound was incredible. True to form, he added energy and some big moments. Those at the stage grounds were in full dance- completely different dance from the evening. I loved seeing 18 year olds totally get off on what was coming out of the speakers, with perhaps no idea to Digweed's historical EDM significance. He laid down a "TRUE SET".
The people we great. Vendors very nice. Some cool and funny costumes. My wife was looking hot has hell in her outfit... Fun rides. Everything was just right. All in all, we did enjoy ourselves, but when the sun went down, and we were looking for some mainstage magic, we were scratching our heads.
Both Kinetic and Circuit sounded way too similar. Sometimes, they played the exact same stuff on each. Circuit Stage did have more dubstep going, but the difference ended there. We found ourselves saying "more of the same" as we went to each stage (except Neon Garden which was awesome but we wanted more up tempo).
So here is what I heard as the MAJOR musical theme running through the night: tunes that would have a small bit of groove, some melody for a couple minutes as it built up, it would peak and then instead of lifting off higher into the air, it would kick down real hard grounding you with tech heavy, no melody, heavy straight pounding beat with little to no bass line. What genre do we call this? I guess trance/house techno? It is definitely EDM, but it is definitely not trance, house, progressive, etc... It felt like they were trying to copy how Tiesto often plays festivals, but it just didn't have the same type of positive energy. I suppose they are catering to the "rager"-whatever that is. In a sea of thousands, my wife pegged it on the nose by pointing out that very few people were actually dancing. Just more of a "mosh bobbing". I replied, "yeah it feels what I would liken to different styles of "rock n roll", where what we are listening to I would liken to the "heavy metal" of the EDM scene at the moment.
Also, we notice than many of the DJ's had no understanding, plan, or direction when it came to building "A set". They were just throwing in songs. No flow, no rhyme, no reason. It felt like they were thinking "ah hah-is is a big tune, I will play it." No art to the night sets in general at all. The absolute worst when it came to set building was Martin Solveig. I don't know his story at all, so I could be wrong- But, I would suspect that he is a producer of some hits, but has no long term "DJ experience"... It was the oddest mish-mash of songs, some only last 3 minutes, with a moment that included a full on Ghetto Booty mix that killed any vibe he had.
So here I pose some questions about the future of EDM. With the current newer generation driving the festival scene in the US, is what I describe musically the norm of what can be expected? Is true trance dead at the US festivals? Was EDC Orlando on FRIDAY any different from what I describe above on Saturday?
Will I have to end up going to a festival in the UK or Amsterdam to get a proper musical experience? Will I have to go to a specific artist show and just forget festivals? What happened to festivals having those "Anthems" that would just wash over you? Was what I was hearing this generation's "Anthems"?
Am I just an old fogey reminiscing to the good-'l days at festivals when I first heard songs like Tilt-Invisible, Oakenfold-Southern Sun, Underworld-Born Slippy, Ferry Corsten-Punk, etc... and perhaps I am just out of touch? I don't think so, because I discover great new massive tunes every week. I know there is some great new trance music out there, I hear it all the time on the various radio shows like Group Therapy, ASOT, Club Elite Sessions, Skylarking, etc... The question is, is it all lost on America's youth at the moment? It sure was lost at EDC on Saturday. Where can I find it in the future? I missed last year's Ultra Broadcast, but 2 years ago it seemed awesome- Avicii, Guetta, and quite a few others really playing some great stuff. MUSICALLY how did 2013 Ultra and 2013 EDC compare? Similar?
If I took a random 1000 "ragers" from EDC in a time machine, and put them in Club Space Miami, 2002, where Tiesto played the following set, whould they not "rage" harder, better, and happier than any other time in thier lives??? I sure the hell did...And plan to again- somewhere somehow. I challenge a new school kid to build this set and let me know:

edc is one of the poorest excuses for a festival ever. i went in 2011 and i noticed the same things you addressed.
theres a lot of ways to look at this but heres my 2 cents...
first and foremost, this new genre you couldnt place is called 'trouse.' maybe a joke of a name but it really fits. these days mainstream producers just follow simple formulas with the same exact drops. because i guess its too difficult to be original. same reason they cant build a set.
take a listen to this: https://soundcloud.com/daleri/epic-mashleg . its 16 drops from tracks that were in the beatport top 100 during the summer. please someone explain to me why any of these artists deserve a single cent for using a recycled sound. sadly, they are richer than i will ever be.
i guess a large part of the problem is the masses. most edm fans are generally younger. most are not like us. i personally have been listening to edm for well over 15 years and i can say ive seen how genres have grown, changed, and even died. in addition i have been to a wide range of parties in many different places over the world. however most edm fans (the ones that are actually paying the bills even if it is coming from mommy and daddy) simply do not possess this experience and therefore the knowledge that comes with it. i mean we all have to start somewhere and admittedly i listened to some cheesy back in the day too. so the starting point for these kids is social media and beatport and whatever artists can just jam the most amount of their sound down their throats. why did hardwell win #1 this year? defiantly not because hes the best dj in the world but rather because his team does the best job promoting his brand. he does a damn good job getting huge events out to his fans. his tomorrowland sets are on youtube in full basically as soon as its possible. same with his ultra sets and world tour kickoff shows etc etc. so simply because this is available to the younger generation this is what theyre feeding off of and thats what they end up wanting more of. hence why two stages basically had the same sound.
its sad that this simplistic sound (although sometimes fun) is whats driving the money in our scene, while actually the more meaningful sounds are being forgotten. but at the end of the days its all about dollars to the promoters. at some point the bubble will burst and our music will be out and uncool again. we will see less shows but at this point we will also see a rise in the quality of music.
its just edc orlando is not a good indication of everything thats going on. its really just a cheap ass festival. i mean okay, if you know what you're getting yourself into you can have fun. i made the most of it when i was there in 2011, either you can bitch and moan all day or make the best of it. but its more of an excuse for these kids to rage than a celebration of whats making the artists move at the moment. being a dj used to be about sharing the music you loved. either that track you just poured your heart into or that special record you found after digging around in the record shop for hours that you havent be able to get out of your head. but times have changed.

Oh my gosh! That is EXACTLY what we were thinking...I swear we heard the exact same tech riffs and chunky beats song after song. On both mainstages...
I think calling it "trouse" is an injustice to Trance and House (assuming it is mashing the two together). Kind of reminds me a little of "Hard House"... How about we call it "Hard Hech".
I haven't watched any of the Tomorrowworld (belgium) vids... is this sound overtaking all festivals at the moment? Or is it fair to say it is more prevalent at EDC than others?
