Id' just kinda like to back up what some other ppl have already said... well, for one thing, i disagree with whoever said that epic tracne lovers cant like progressive at the same time!!!!! I for one get the same chills and exhileration from Armin Live @ Club <> that i get from Marco V's incredible innercity set!! I love them both and appreciate them both for what they are..... i personally find armin's set better for background music while driving or doing HW or something, but its still fun to crank it loud out & bust out the liquid grooves. i havent had a chance to make up my own mind about max graham, all ive heard from him was "airtight"... i wasnt thoroughly impressed, then again my opinion of oakey's PP cd tainted my judgement. i refuse to just jump on the "i love max" bandwagon just coz everyone else did.
For another thing, Pepi youre REALLY spoiled in toronto old bud... imagine a city where there are 3 decent clubs, all of which spin hip hop and R&B and you'll feel my and viceroy's pain.
Lastly, if youre in need of recent epic trance, how about "flight 643" or nordlander's into the sky.. ask infinity for some ideas, he'll know a whole bunch more. trust me there's still PLENTY new uplifting being made.

| yeah..toronto's got a serious trance scene goin' on. max graham is awesome...but it might not be other people' style. it wasn't mine as first but when i looked at it from an 'artistic point of view', his work is quite invigorating. |

At that part of the post I was just pointing out that alot of us that live in Canada/US/Etc have a hard time even finding clubs/parties that play any style of trance. In some European countries (like Holland for instance), Trance is quite a bit more popular, and I would assume that it's easier for you guys to find clubs/parties that are playing trance.

Now that this thread has become much more civil, maybe we can have a decent conversation on progressive. One thing I've noticed here and in other threads, is no one seems to be able to give a concrete definition to the word progressive. The only definition I've seen here with any frequency is something like: It builds up throughout the entire song, why do you think it's called progressive? Well, I, for one, am not sure that this is why it's called progressive. Progressive is a buzz word, it's being used to describe all forms of music, not just trance. My mother even used it to describe a town recently. In the 80s, alot of the rock that was being played (like Devo, Depeche Mode, etc) was called progressive before it got tagged as new wave. So, what does all of this mean? To me, progressive refers to the fact that the genre as a whole is progressing, not that each song is a progression from beginning to end. As an example, listen to Max Graham - Airtight, and compare it to your favorite melodic trance anthem. Which one sounds more modern? Which one isn't as classically inspired? I'd have to definately answer Airtight to both questions (and for the record, I'm saying it doesn't mimic classical music like melodic trance does, I'm certainly not saying that Airtight isn't an inspired song :)). This seems to be quite in line with what progressive rock was doing in the 80s. Those bands were playing a much more modern type of rock, that broke the stranglehold of classical music influences.
So, to sum up, progressive trance will probably do one of two things. Either it will break off from trance and become a genre in its own right (and probably under a different name), or it will fuse with melodic trance down the road and we'll end up with a more modern form of trance. Either way, it's great. Change is necessary, otherwise life would get pretty boring. |

I didn't say I don't like him, I think his stuff is okay but I woudn't label any of it as classic and I don't understand all the hype over him! |

We can describe any song from from any genre as progressive, but in trance, we use the term to call the style that's a bit more minimalistic and innovative errr it's sooo hard to describe... we can all distinguish it when we hear it... Theres peepz out there who have already drawn a line between trance and progressive... I dunno it's all bull trying to categorize everything like that, but there is significance... you usually get this happening when a new form of music is developing... we're witnessing evolution here and it's cool... it doesn't mean anyone's gonna forget the trance that got us into this whole thing (for me it was epic)

| I think we can all agree to disagree on who likes what style...cause they all have great choons! What we are really just trying to get as is that uplifting trance has been a bit bastardized over the years (just like Moby and his music) to where there IS great stuff still coming out, but all the darudes and jeans have tainted it. Progressive is the new art form that uplfiting once was. I personally think uplifting peaked several years ago, and yes that kinda sux...its just that if you want fresh stuff you need to look elsewhere most of the time. I LOVE all types of trance, I just personally think the world is going breakbeat and progressive. peace. |
