Er, where were you lot when I've listed my all time fave tunes and just before infinity posted that I have listed some good tunes out at the moment! I think I'm entitled to state my opinions!

Furee: I agree completely. When I think of progressive the words minimalistic and innovative come to mind. Of course, it's kind of a retro sound for me, since I grew up with detroit techno (doesn't get much more minimalistic than a single drum machine and a single 303 :)). I'm not so sure labels are really a bad thing, they can really help with communication. Prejudging something because of a label, though, is a bad thing. Any more adjectives to describe progressive? Maybe we can come up with a working definition of what progressive means in the trance genre.

Thank You all for your replies.........
I deserved the critsism and I take it with much thought
I was quite upset at the time of the initial post and I think most of my ANGER came from the fact that Toronto Clubs are ....
My Opinion is still the same about progressive unless its hard pounding HEY maybe I dont even know what real progressive is ....
In any case you all know what it is Im talking about maybe I just labeled the type of music I dislike with the wrong name.....
As For AVISTON......you are the man because you said it the way I would've liked to except I was angry....so to you much thanks.......
And to everyone much thanks because I started this thread and I got 40 of you to respond and give me feedback and advice and at the same time Im sure a few of us including myself have learned something in the process......
So in Conclusion Epic Still Rules and thanks to all who answered this thread........CIAO

Well, people like different things. I don't think it's justified to start flaming someone if he doesn't like some genre or either because he likes some genre. Very often people just can't state their opinions calmly enough which leads into pointless flamewar.

Personally, I don't like progressive trance too much either. There are some tunes which are really well made like Airtight, but it doesn't give me any vibes like some epic/uplifting trance tunes do. Most progressive trance DJs make me fall asleep and I don't feel like dancing in xtc at all :)

In other words, pluR <--- Respect others and their taste. Accept the fact that people like different things. Explore new stuff. Widen your vision.

I live in Victoria, BC, Canada and almost all local trance DJs model themselves after Max Graham's style and spin Progressive & Breakbeat Trance (like Hybrid). There are not many DJs out here who spin much Epic/Uplifting trance these days. It is definately "out of style" at the moment among DJs and producers. I am not the biggest fan of Progressive sets at parties. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy the occasional good Progressive set, but I am just hearing far too much of it lately. At parties, I would much prefer hearing more Epic, Uplifting, Acid and Goa/Psy styles of Trance, and a little less Progressive.

I recently saw Max Graham here in Victoria and he absolutely tore the roof off the club. It was the best club night I have ever been to, as well as one of the best "Progressive" sets I have ever heard. Max Graham is actually on the more "high energy" end of the Progressive scale. Most other Progressive DJs that I have heard locally, spin a slightly deeper and darker style, which can easily be very boring. Altho, I have heard some very good Deep Progressive sets. One of note was a set by tag-team trance duo from Vancouver Bajwa & Dale Anderson = www.bajwa-dale.com

The point of a progressive set is to smoothly progress and flow slowly building from track to track to a climax. So, the whole set should be a long journey with peaks and valleys. It's all about FLOW! If done well, it can be a mind-blowing musical journey. It takes a lot of skill though and there are very few DJs out there that have mastered it. It's a lot more challenging than just throwing down the best epic/uplifting tracks... I think that's why a lot of trance DJs are choosing the progressive style right now. Epic/Uplifting trance (a la Oakenfold) is currently shunned by many in the DJing community. Trance DJs can earn a lot more respect among their peers if they master the art of Progressive.

Unfortunately, most people that go to clubs and parties are not as well versed in the music as the DJing community is, so they don't always appreciate the musical journey that the DJ is trying to create. They just wanna hear their favourite tracks. It's true though that most DJs don't always take enough consideration into what most people want to hear. Many of them take their music a little too seriously, constantly searching for new underground material and don't just "have fun with it" often enough and mix it up a bit every once in a while, which would often make for better party music.

Pepi931056010523534556796855blah blah bhla, stop cutting up hard trance and NU NRG. It'cheesy epic stuff that puts you to sleep way too early when youre at a party.

Pepi: Not a problem man, just doing my part :).

Finnhawk: Your post was well thought out and informative. It didn't even flame anyone, and I, for one, appreciate that :). You did say, however, that uplifting trance is out of style amongst DJs and Producers currently and I'm not so sure I agree. People who have historically been uplifting trance DJs still seem to spinning it. Sure, DJs like Max Graham are being noticed, but so are uplifting DJs such as Misja Helsloot, Cor Fijneman, and DJ Jamie. As for local DJs spinning progressive, that doesn't suprise me. Maybe where you're at they used to spin uplifting, but DJs anywhere near me have always spun a much housier progressive style of trance. Not much uplifting trance has ever come out of the Americas to my knowledge. Big names such as Tenaglia, Lawrence, Micro, and Collins have never really spun much uplifting trance. What I have noticed is that the DJs and producers from the Americas and England are gaining in popularity, and we/they certainly have a more progressive style then say Holland does. What I'd like to know is, in Holland are DJs and producers who are known for uplifting trance starting to spin and create progressive? If the answer is yes, then I'd have to agree, uplifting is on the decline, and progressive is making its move. If not, then all we're really seeing is a new style of trance gaining acceptance. Oh, and for the record, I definately do not equate Oakenfold with uplifting trance.
