It's basically that we're working on a contract with a client that requires extensive contract-specific knowledge that no replacement could possibly know. You could train someone to have that requisite knowledge in a month or two (although they'd probably continue to make mistakes, work slowly and defer constantly for a while longer), but we're balls deep in the contract right now and there isn't any time available to perform that training. |
Again, my advice remains; unless you are absolutely committed to leaving if you don't get what you want (and you don't care about burning bridges) then demanding a raise by exploiting the situation is a bad idea. |

In my experience large companies have a well documented pay structure with an impartial HR department implementing pay and raises. Small companies there is little in the ways of rules and morals.
I believe employees should be able to have a respectful discussion with a manager outlining the reasons they feel they're entitled to raise. Then listening to managers response. Obviously if not handled properly by both sides it can lead to bad feelings. Common mistake which you are describing is telling not asking for a raise. |

I had a situation a couple years ago where I had a client give me an unsolicited written offer which was around 25k per year more than i was currently making for a position that was, in my opinion slightly out of my experience range at the time. I took that offer to my director and was completely honest that while i acknowledged the offered position was out of my current experience range, my market value was clearly above what i was currently being paid. The director was able to meet me half way within 4 hours which was still completely reasonable for me. 12.5k increase without burning bridges or making threats. |

| Yea making a threat of walking away with out a solid offer by a competitor is pretty dumb. They'll just fire you after your project is done. |

| Thank you all for reiterating the foolishness of a plan I never proposed. |

That is exactly what you proposed. "I want a raise, or I'm leaving" is essentially what you are suggesting.
Feel free to explain otherwise though, I'd love to hear it. |

"Essentially" presumably meaning "ignoring all the important details". You might assume I'm a colossal idiot who'd threaten to leave a job without an alternative lined up if you'd only read my first post, but I've already clarified that I'd be sure to have an offer from another company before making my move. |

In fairness, my advice has little to do with whether or not you have a competing offer and more to do with whether or not you are entirely committed to leaving if you do not succeed in your negotiations. There is a difference. |

| Yes, I understand that. And of course I would have to leave if they didn't acquiesce. I wouldn't go to all the trouble of finding another job, going through the interview process and getting an offer merely to use as a bargaining chip. If I had no intention of leaving I would simply lie about having another offer on the table. |

| Pretty sure your plan would work depending on which gangster flic you used to voice your threat. |
