Help with Synthesis
View this Thread in Original format
Georis
Hey everyone,

I want to really be able to get more into just making my own sounds from scratch. I make uplifting trance and some orchestral/ambient type of things, so I was wondering if anyone could help direct me in where I could begin to learn more about synthesis. I always have trouble starting a sound from scratch, let alone making it sound good at all :nervous:

If this helps at all, some of the synths that catch my attention the most are Zebra 2 and V-station. I also really like Sylenth, and NI Massive too.

If anyone could just point me to maybe a video or just help me out right on the forums with how I could get better at learning how to use a synthesizer, that'd be great :D

Thanks for your time,

~ Will

My advice is to focus on just one synth because almost everything that you learn early on will be transferable to every other subtractive synth, so minimize the variables to keep it simpler. Zebra is an excellent choice, since it covers so much ground. Check out the Zebra tutorials from SoundMagus in this thread.

Learning envelopes and what they do is really important. the type of sound you want depends heavily on how you design the envelope, and all envelope filters and types sound different, have different characteristics. if you can find a nice synth that has an envelope you like, it will help out a lot when you are making sounds.

really the best way is just start fiddling around and have a good time of it.

I would say even Zebra could be a bit daunting if you're just starting out. Maybe something very basic like Tone2 Firebird. I started out using that piece of Korg EA-1 but the simplicity of it did provide a solid foundation

That's a good point. The OP mentioned V-Station, which would also be a good simple choice.

Reverse enigineer presets. Also motivation.

Do you wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and say to yourself 'remember, be a cvnt today'?

And if the answer is yes, at least do it with some panache and style like Brother Clooney.

ah yes the joy of youtube tutorials

step 1: 45 second intro of someones first attempt at final cut pro

step 2: "sup guys"

step 3: hour long monologue detailing the motivation behind making the tutorial

step 4: close video

rinse and repeat

for the times i've tried to crack a particular sound that i 've really been having a hard time to really nail down the genesis of the sound, i have never really found youtube or websites any help. You end up spending more time searching when you could of spent all that time experimenting.

I try to listen and remember, spend dedicated time trying new things, and accept that i will not get something perfect, but maybe something close, and while trying, well you find a new path you follow and develop your own vocabulary of sounds.

I do find that being focused when ou are doing exercise, like trying to sound like something else, helpful so you don't just keep using init and doing the same things which i have caught myself doing. You have to catch yourself doing the same things which well something about crazy and a some smart jew
