I just wonder why a guy like System J even cares why someone gets a tattoo? You either care or don't care about what other people do, and if you truly DO care - like genuinely interested to know and appreciate - then isn't it more intelligent to make a genuine attempt at understanding someone's motives? And System J has argued too hard in this thread to pull an Srussell carenotcare post.
The other option is to just be honest with yourself and admit that you enjoy being judgmental and making assumptions about people based on nothing more than the beliefs you've concocted yourself - which there is absolutely nothing wrong with, btw. I do it all the time and am wrong often - it's helped me relax my own attitudes about many things.
You can't have it both ways.
edit: I mean, couldn't you have just left it at "I think people who get tattoos are stupid."? Jesus. |

It's kind of funny that someone arguing the point of "people change" argues their own beliefs with such loud conviction. :stongue: |
Let me pull up a chair while you elaborate on that one.

I'm not trying to have it both ways at all. I am openly stating I look at tattoos and think they're silly. A lot of people will try to come across as tolerant and permissive and then quietly judge people in their mind. The difference here is I'm stating it out loud. All I meant by my previous post is it's probably coming across like I care a lot more than I do because I've been prompted to expand on this subject at length. You should know by now that I'll think something through and write the essay rather than going "whatever" if it comes to a debate, but it doesn't mean I carry all this around in my head every time I see a tattoo.
I just think it's funny that the COR is so often an ego session for a bunch of middle class white people to rag on others about how much money they earn, how good their clothing tastes are, how well they eat and other bourgeois concerns, but suddenly in this thread being judgemental apparently means you're going to die lonely and getting annoyed by tattoos is on par with opposing gay marriage. |

Huh? Lol.
Anyways, I like tats on women. Just in moderation.
I have three of them myself. One on my upper left arm (got it illegally in South Korea in the Army) and one on my right. The other is on my right forearm (although it's visible, I've never caught flack about it from so-called professionals).
No matter what, they're a part of me. I was in a moment in my past in which I wanted a particular one and that's that. I accept it. People ask me all the time about them and I love explaining the story. That's the fun behind it. It's a sort of abstract art. Some people might look, judge, and perceive. They won't go further than that. The people that dare to ask - well, 9 times out of 10 it's turned out to be a great conversation. If you own your tats and there's a meaning behind them from your own perspective, that's all that matters IMO. |

Bet you wouldn't to my face. A forum is a forum. You're the jack of all trades around here, sir. |

Not necessarily, of course, but I'm sure there are plenty of other things you've changed your mind on and it's extremely difficult to predict what will stand the test of time. More than that, tattoos aren't just liking something external to you. Getting one for cosmetic reasons is saying "I want to look like this for the rest of my life", and self-image is the one thing almost guaranteed to change in life, both the way you look as you physically age and your self-perception as a subject and how you reflect that. |
But what about the pew pew? |
