I find it myopic because tastes, aesthetics, values change over the course of your life - if you don't think they will you're effectively admitting you're someone who will experience no notable personal growth for the rest of your life.

surely "growth" or "change" doesn't necessarily equate to "dislike something i used to like" though? im obsessed with babylon 5's shadow vessels for instance. it's been 20 years since i first saw one. i've discovered heaps of new stuff in the world i like since then, but i still love those ships?

and i want one on my back. pew pew!

It was originally an ancient tribal practise of showing commitment to ones (sub)culture after all. It hasn't changed much in that regard, and it's rather a different thing then simply stamping a painting to your chest. When they were repolularised in the 1970's they were an important statement for the emancipation of the youth, being seen as marks of deviance by older generations. Still a very relevant thing today and not exactly something to be ashamed of.

Well, this is one of my main bones of contention with tattoos on the fashion/cosmetic front. Their subcultural capital has severely decreased in recent years now every teenage girl has a loveheart on her ankle and every geek has Pikachu's face etched on his ball sack. To maintain their transgressive edge tattoos have to be taken to ever more ludicrous extremes, with full sleeves and backs becoming more common. This article sums it up neatly on my behalf: http://www.theguardian.com/commenti...-unartistic-art

I wish I could get irrationally angry over something that makes no difference to my life whatsoever.

Hey, how about that gay marriage?

I'm not being angry at all. I stated my honest thoughts in reponse to the OP and it's only because I've been pressed from numerous angles that I've expanded on those thoughts at length, which probably makes it look like I care significantly more than I do. If I see you have a tattoo I'm not going to get angry, but part of me is going to think "Well, that's a bit silly".

Quite remarkable really. This is the COR, where judgement is readily dispensed on people's wealth, weight, physical appearance, choice of partner and much more, and yet suddenly the mood has gone all "live and let live" because I've criticised something that a lot of people here possess.

Your ad hominem attack on my personal growth - which you only just touted as being a rather significant aspect of a person's existence - isn't exactly the hallmark of a balanced individual.

I wouldn't claim to be perfectly balanced by any means, but I'm not a borderline alcoholic in a menial job, and in this instance it's a fairly natural response to read your post and construe it as a personal attack on me, especially as you have plenty of previous on this front.

Not necessarily, of course, but I'm sure there are plenty of other things you've changed your mind on and it's extremely difficult to predict what will stand the test of time. More than that, tattoos aren't just liking something external to you. Getting one for cosmetic reasons is saying "I want to look like this for the rest of my life", and self-image is the one thing almost guaranteed to change in life, both the way you look as you physically age and your self-perception as a subject and how you reflect that.

And? This actually enforces what some here are saying. Getting a tattoo is a permanent reflection of a choice made at one point in time in a person's life. People change, yes - but it doesn't mean all the old parts of yourself just stop existing or aren't relevant to who you are now.

Some people keep journals. Others get tattoos.

I was actually more curious about the strong reaction. Personally I have no strong feelings about tattoos one way or another.

It's kind of funny that someone arguing the point of "people change" argues their own beliefs with such loud conviction. :stongue:

I think that people that get large tattoos are secretly figuring they will die young and pretty.

When in turn Jenny will just have a bunch of wrinkly dicks on her back.

I bet you there are more people who regret keeping journals than there are people who regret getting a tattoo lol.
