it was such a fantastic year even though I can't say I was around. I believe it's the best year where both styles were thriving in terms of popularity and quality of music.

I think I heard trance being played at raves maybe twice, ever. But this is my tiny bubble of experience from the midwest. Once was the very opening slot before anyone got there and the other was when the headliner was playing in the other room, and again nobody was there. Plenty of the tribal progressive stuff though. Then everyone started doing k and mnml came in and killed it.

Interesting insight. I'm surprised john digweed was voted #1 dj in djmag that year. Was he that huge that year? Damn. I thought someone like DJ Tiesto or PVD would've won it considering how they were novelty in the trance community.

Trance has never been as big as its fans and artists would like to believe.

Still it became bigger then I expected it to be. That expectation is from late 90's when Eurodance got less popular.

Progressive probably overtook trance at around the 2002 mark.

2001 had urban train, the tiesto in concert thing was just about to get started as well. TA posts were referring to PvD as God and Armin's ASOT was a new thing and had a much harder sound. It was an interesting time to be a trance fan, then when things like Airdrawndagger came about prog pretty much took over the fanbase.

There was a lot of tension between the prog and trance fans. I have to admit I found the 2002 style to be boring as hell. There was this notion that trance fans naturally grow up to "better" genres that irritated me. It was a good time though, I had just turned 18 and was starting to go out and I got to see a lot of amazing .
