I know very little about whiskeys and scotch, but I want to know a good bottle to buy for a friend as a Christmas gift and I'm completely in the dark.
I don't want to spend more than $150 and it has to be available from Quebec's SAQ (Government run liquor store. It's the only place I can buy hard alcohol in the province).
Please and thanks.

Thanks man.
It's available very close to my place. And under budget! |

I'm partial to Glenmorangie even though it isn't expensive. You don't have to spend over $50 to get something good. I'd stay away from anything heavily peat unless you know he likes it. I got this bottle of Arbeg just the smell of it would kill a lesser man.

My dad was a big chivas' guy and often brought home plenty of Johnny Walker of varying labels depending on the occasion. I personally favor, Chivas. I'm not a connoisseur, but I've known whiskey for a while. Don't really favor alcohol that much except for some days. |

Michter's Bourbon is fantastic, should be around $80. Rowan's Creek Bourbon is also amazing, around $60.
Re: Scotch, I've been a huge fan of the Glenfarclas 105 lately, but not sure if you can get it there. Lagavulin is obviously top notch.
Don't overlook Japanese whiskey, either. Yamazaki and Nikka have both been putting out some amazing stuff. |

I'm a real whisky fan.
Laphroaig is always a good bet, anything over 15 years - the rest are essentially cheaper vintages to get you in to the brand and aren't worth the $15-40 saving over the older bottles.
Glenmorangie 21 yr is fantastic, smooth with the great burn without the acid. I don't care for 18 (not as smooth) and strangely enough the 25 (all burn).
Talisker are all too acidic/sharp for me but some like that.
one of the best I've had was actually a Swiss Whiskey, Called Swiss Ice Label. It's not cheap at around 200chf a bottle but it's really quite amazing. They hired 3 of the top whisky makers to come to Switzerland and recreate the methods used, even the same altitudes etc but using Swiss mountain water as the base. Really clean, mid sharp whisky. Won a ton of awards, beating most of the real scotches the year it was launched.
Lews is absolutely right about the Japanese; they are making incredible whiskeys these days. If it's for a gift, you may want to get something a little more obvious like a true Scotch.
Slightly offtopic, but I killed a Jack Daniels Limited Sinatra Vontage at thanksgiving. Really ing good - has that burnt smoothness that Tennessee whiskeys should have but much more refined and slightly more like a scotch in that it's less sugary and a little sharper. It's $180 a bottle though. |

| If you do make the mistake of buying American whisky, go for a rye. Some of the older Bulleit or Russell's Reserves are decent. I would stay away from most bourbon, because you pay out your ass for anything that's even halfway decent. A 40 dollar bottle of single malt is better than most 50-60 dollar bourbons. |

Stick to Scotch suggestions :p Bulleit is ridiculously overpriced, in my opinion. Rittenhouse, Sazerac, Michter's are all much better. , Old Overholt tastes about the same, if not better, for half the price. Willett makes my favorite rye, though. Not sure what the distribution is north of the border.
And there is, obviously, a huge difference in taste between a bourbon and a scotch. Just because you can get a delicious scotch for 40 doesn't mean it's any better than a delicious bourbon for 50. |
