i don't think toronto really has that premier club anymore. if you're a tourist the only name that would mean something would have been guv. coda is missing residents IMO. at guv you had names like mark oliver, greg gow, manzone/strong, so when there was no bookings it would still be worthwhile to reach. its also missing a signature sound/feel. theres a couple good/decent labels based in toronto that would be cool if they set up shop there ( correct me if I'm wrong but - new kanada, microcastles, MFR, no.19 [nitin plays often enough but more as an opener for someone else] )

I agree, but coda does have a junkies, and Nathan barato monthly residency... considering jonny white is a silent owner in Coda you would think there would be some sort of no 19 influence of sorts...

like what do we really have uniun, maison, ryze, red.... don't get me wrong I have enjoyed each of those spots on different nights... but they don't really stand out internationally... cabana? lol its just a rip off of Miami and with out the weather we really cant compete lol

we do have Electric Island... that's a stand out for the city...
speaking of EI anybody know whos lined up this year?

Junkies/Barato are only quarterly residents I think. I'm pretty sure Jon Jon and Gera play there more often than they do and they certainly aren't the same kind of residents that Mark Oliver or Manzone and Strong were to Guv.

I can't comment on how Maison has been recently but Coda is a great club. The biggest flaw is that there are no rear speakers. The sound is completely different at the back half of the club than the front half. I really like the LED lighting strips. They've just added more to the walls.

The sound has been great the last few times I've been to Ryze but the lighting usually pisses me off - except for Danny T where it was on point.

I've only been to Red once and was REALLY impressed. Hard to say after one visit but possibly the best big room in Toronto now that Guv has closed. The sound was perfect for Hernan and the lighting was hypnotizing.

What all these great clubs lack for me is a better closing times. We don't need to have Stereo or Berghain hours here but 5AM is just too early to me. I never went to Boa, System Soundbar, Industry or Sonic but it seems like all of them stayed open till at least 8 or 9am. Even Guv stayed open till 7AM. Output, Fabric, Ministry of Sound, Rex Club, Tresor and other big name clubs I've been to all kept the party going well passed 5AM and I don't think any of them have a Mark Oliver that plays every single night (though,I could be wrong). Clubs that are open later also tend to bring extended sets much more often - and to me, that makes a big difference. I'm really tired of 3 hour sets being called "exxxtended sets" lol.

could not agree more about all of this!

and to me an extended set starts at 6 hours plus.

isn't Red the old Cinema? it has a big main room? It was like 50-60% table service back in those days...

isn't there bylaws or whatever that stop the club for going past 5am... I don't think it's the clubs fault or they would do it... but I usually close out coda and it does die early on, even when the big guns are in town... even during TIFF or fashion week when we get extended last call most club I've been to still die out early and they cut the booze well before 4 because the club empties out...

im sure if we turn off our blinders and step back and really look at Toronto, we are not the party town we think we are... and its unfair to compare us to Europe and montreal because we are not them... sure theres a few of us that are up for it but its a very small percentage...

if coda added more led strips that is great, I believe in my first review of it I said led the out of it lol just rip off D-Edge in Brazil lol

Toronto is very much a party town. I find it beyond stupid that last call is still 2AM. It should be AT LEAST 3am to match Quebec.

I don't think Toronto is a party town. I think it has some good clubs, but not some absolutely amazing clubs. Licensing laws inhibit that from happening, along with the fact that Toronto City Council has long been indiscriminately at war with club owners in this city. How many condo developments have pushed clubs out of their respective neighbourhoods?

Further to that point, much like NYC you can no longer open a club without having a grandfathered liquor license. City council is in collusion with the LCBO to not grant any further licenses for clubs. That doesn't exactly make for a vibrant nightlife.

With that said, I do think Toronto at the moment has an exceptionally strong underground electronic music scene even if it doesn't have a lot of great venues to support that scene.

There's no way there's a bylaw preventing clubs staying open past 5AM. Guv was open till 7 or later and Zone is open till 11am consistently while Ryze stayed open till 3PM last Canada Day weekend and 8PM on New Year's Day. They've even had quite a few parties that have lasted till 6AM. Even Vola used to do parties till 7AM with Mark Oliver when it first opened.

Red got rid of most of the booths at Cinema. There's 3-4 at the side now and 1 at the back and a really large dance floor.

While clubs like Coda and Ryze start to taper off around 4AM or so, I think that's only because that's when the headliner steps off. If they had the headliners playing later I think people would stick around later as well.

And our 2AM last call is one of the biggest jokes in our "world class city". No other world class city has a 2AM last call. What grinds my gears the most is how they switch it to 4AM when there's something big going on like TIFF or fashion week. All of a sudden everyone is responsible enough to drink past 2AM when there is influx of people visiting the city. Montreal testing out a 6AM last call makes us look even more pathetic.

alright I got a response from swamper lol

as much as I love my city, I just can't see it for all the reasons listed in the last couple of posts... it sucks

montreal did test extending the last call in something like 12 bars last summer but I don't know what the results were...

not to be the dick or anything I just don't think are night life can hack it compared to other cities down south or across the pond... even Ibiza starting to tighten up there belts a few years ago...
