Holy my 'real' and 'reel' sound the same

ee-ROLL THE R-an

that's the closest you're gonna get me thinks

Like I said, I'm not a native speaker, so I'm sure you guys know about the pin-pen merger a lot better than I do. Wikipedia fooled me though, because it never mentioned it was a diphthong, damn Wiki!

Wait, really!? You like sounds (erm... music) and language, but you don't like phonetics? Heh, didn't see it coming.

I love this . But then I was never forced to take a class on it. Things are usually more fun that way.

I didn't really mind most classes I had on phonetics. I self-taught myself the stuff when I was 18 and I still have an IPA chart above my bed, so the lecturers often let me pronounce the sounds they couldn't say (like uvular trills and lateral fricatives). That was fun.

This usually happened in the beginning of the semester, so the lecturers would let me mind my own business in class and play solitaire on my computer :p

I don't think that's uncommon (or it could be the fact we're both influenced by the same language :p), there's a discussion about it here, but it's funny that not even the natives seem to agree on whether they sound the same or not.

Probably like "paz" and "pais" in Portuguese. I don't care if they don't rhyme to purists, I pronounce them exactly the same way :p

Real and reel should sound the same!

Yeah, they definitely sound the same to me.

Say "Was it a real reel?" and "Was the reel real?"

I'm sure that some of your fellow British citizens would have plenty of nice things to say about your accent.

Thus "fellow British citizens."

Are you not also Scottish?
rubez
yes, different accents are one thing.

pronouncing words in a stupid way is another. what is that? to stand out? eye-ran. preposterous.

i'm sure condy used to say "eye-ran", then flipped back to normality to say iranian (not eye-ranian)

WTF.
