Yeah since when do they not? |
This is just an educated guess, but probably after North America was colonised and before the English settled in other continents, because it seems to be mostly a North American thing (except in New England and in swathes of the American South), so it's probably common among non-Brits who wouldn't pronounce the "r" in North. In short, that's why Stu isn't surprised, but everyone else is.
I'm all in favour of ditching the pronunciation guides in English dictionaries and just telling people they should listen to their heart :D |

Wat? Are you guys being serious?
Hurry rhymes with Curry.
Furry rhymes with Blurry
So no, hurry does not rhyme with furry - There's a dip in tone on U for the the latter.
furry = fur-ree
Hurry - ha-ree
(both said fast with no gap as such between syllables). |

| Lira is just over thinking something to prove a point that will be lost on anyone who isn't a linguist professor. Let me put you to sleep while I explain why something that rhymes doesn't really rhyme if you don't pronounce it correctly. |

| Actually, "hurry" and "furry" not rhyming is an east coast and south thing, in a U.S. context. People with "standard" American accents rhyme them. |

| I'm English. I could care less what the east coast accents do to my language :p |

COME AT US BRO!!!! :D
By the way, it's probably easier to say that the "u" in curry sounds like the "u" in "hut" and the "u" in furry sounds like the "u" in "hurt", assuming they don't pronounce the two vowels the same way. That's the difference, right? Right?! RIGHT!?!?

That's it. It's really what the letters before and after the U do to it.
Curry and blurry aren't a 100% exact rhyme but they're the closest I can think of. The only other thing I can think of would be the name "Murray".
But sure as , Furry and Curry do NOT ing rhyme. |
