The fall of EDM is coming... (pg. 4)

So a lot of stuff I am reading right now is about how "quiet" it was in Miami this year. I have read about 3 articles on the decline of attendance to Miami in general. I knew this earlier in the week when my fb newsfeed was being blasted by "sponsored" ads for pool parties in Miami. Then, I get the email blasts on discounts for the pool parties and I knew it was going to be a slow week in Miami.
Even the UBER drivers and Taxis were complaining about how calm it was, and that "next week" the WMC crowd was going to get there and be busy. Kinda crazy they thought that because of how calm it was.
I'm starting to think, that only delusional promoters still believe "Edm" is still growing...

So this past week was "Miami Music Week" right? yet the taxi drivers were thinking that next week was WMC week? I got a little lost on this one. |

I believe they are confused with the fact that this current week is the official Miami-Dade/Broward spring break time. So, naturally they assume this is the busy WMC week. |

A little bit of both.
WMC/Ultra and MMW was the same week, this past week. I think it's always been the same week, minus one year maybe two?
What I kinda meant was, that it was so slow the drivers were confused on what was actually going on, because it wasn't as crazy as last year. They thought WMC/MMW was this up and coming week. |

I could see how people would perceive this year's "Music Week" as being slow, but it's just that, perception. The average out-of-towner believes that South Beach is the central hub for everything that is Miami. That's just not the case. Downtown is growing so rapidly along with Wynwood. All of the major parties that most people attended were between the two areas. I work at Heart & Space downtown, and I can tell you that there was never a dull moment downtown. On Thursday night at Heart, our first sold out night since opening last September, our line was so massive that we were close to getting shut down because there were so many people on 11th Street and not enough staff to control the flow of the crowd. We got it handled though, thankfully, and it ended up being one of the best parties of the week. Space experienced the same thing on Friday night with the Steve Angello party(who btw played a 6+ hour set digging back to his musical roots). Space truly felt like the days of old with Trance in the Main Room and massive b2b sets headlining the Terrace. My favorite of the week being Dubfire b2b Chris Liebing :eyespop:
Wynwood and North Miami in general were on top their game this week also. Get Lost was the most talked about party all week. Wynwood had a few block parties(some that were free, and genius marketing) that kept people in the area. Wynwood is so competitive with the beach now that it draws everyone away from there. With Mana, Cafeina, MAPS Backlot, Bardot, Electric Pickle, RC Plant pulling a lot of the major talent this past week, it's hard for the overpriced South Beach Clubs to compete..Not to mention the bar scene in Wynwood is much more relaxed and people there are much more friendly.
Now, that's where the "perception" and misconception comes in. The "EDM" bubble already bursted, and there are new trends. The South Beach nightlife scene is dead and has been dying since 2013, probably even before that. Locals don't cross the bridge to the Beach unless it's to go to Trade, Treehouse, or Do Not Sit. Nobody wants to pay the prices of places like LIV or Story, nor do they want to see Martin Garrix, Afrojack, or David Guetta. And the crowds there are too fake. Tourists are even starting to catch on, finally. The Megaclub/VIP catered/Plastic crowd on the beach is what is killing their scene. They haven't adjusted to current trends and continue to be greedy, which will bite them in the ass in the end.
The Pool Parties on the Beach throughout the week also took a hit in ticket sales. I remember years past when lines were wrapped around the block to get into the Surfcomber. Now, there are too many Hotels that have tried to dip their hands in the MMW cookie jar, saturating the market. Also, the lineups were nothing fresh or new. A lot of this boils down to the ridiculous Ultra/MMW tax on Hotels throughout the week. The average joe international DJ looking to travel here for the week just can't afford to cover their travel expenses with bookings in Miami. This isn't something that I see changing anytime soon either, because in Miami now, occupancy at most major hotels in the central parts of Downtown and the Beach stay at 90%+ occupancy all year long. March is their cash crop, regardless of the music or not.
Music Week and Ultra are never going away. Ultra sold out this year, probably having one of their best lineups in 6 years. I believe this is due in large part to the Resistance stage and lineup. Everything at Resistance is what's trending in the music scene right now. I see it first hand every week here. The guys from that lineup are the ones packing Heart, Space, Trade & Treehouse in Miami every week. It's not any of the mainstream guys at the struggling "high-end" clubs.
As a resident who has to drive through all of this traffic and madness, I can tell you that the city is still just as alive as ever. The Miami Herald writes an article stating the "decline of EDM" in Miami, because they are biased against the entire thing and have been trying to shut it down for years, The traffic is still a major pain in the ass. The people are here, they're everywhere. They are just more spread out now and not congested in certain areas.
The UBER drivers are complaining, because UBER has literally just become a "thing" here in Miami. 99% of them probably never worked for UBER during a Music Week. The Taxi drivers are complaining, because well, they always complain and they hate UBER drivers. Their market is over saturated as well. These guys also believe that "next week" aka this current week will be busy, because this is the South Florida spring break week. |

Actually, this year WMC actually is this week. It started yesterday.

And to add to that, no..Music Week/Ultra is almost always around the 23rd-28th time frame. So, this year it was different. |

So you're telling me you can get me in to Space, right?!?!
:)
Thanks for the insight. I'm happy to hear that Miami as whole is doing well. There's a special place in my heart for Miami. Love that town. |

I see your point, and that's why I mentioned it could be over saturation in the Market Place. As far as Ultra, it will always sell out just like EDC Vegas, TomorrowLand etc etc. And even if they don't sell out, they will lower capacity just to claim "sold out." Ultra and MMW isn't going anywhere, just like BPM it's here to stay. But how bloated it will stay, is my point in this "EDM" bubble bust. As far as what I was reading, it wasn't just the Miami Times or Miami Herald articles, beatport had a post and a few other "edm" blogs.

Yeah you'r right, but even with WMC I don't think it made that much of an impact tourist wise. WMC looked dead this year from the pictures I saw. :( |

We are 3 days back from MMW-WMC. MMW this year was 15-20 and WMC started 21-27, but the conference itself was 21-24.
There were certainly some highlights and some lowlights as well.
DEFINATELY a smaller crowd than in years past (in SOBE) and we didn't get into DT, but the crowd was good in Wywood as well.
The saturation of hotels trying to get in on the action really thinned things out, and certainly to their own detriment. Some of the events we chose to hit were so sparsely crowded that at points there would be 4 people on the floor and 4 at the bar. There is the obvious ebb and flow of 11am-11pm (or 5am) events to consider but it felt sparse.
Venues like Kill Your Idol, went OFF all MMW however. Guesthouse Showcase (always a hit for us) was on point. I expect nothing less from Mes, J Paul Getoo and Jay-J.
Kinetika Showcase was also a great night @ KYI with their crew throwing down some dirty dirty tech-house. Along with Joeski and Alexander Technique that was a highlight.
Other crews just destroyed KYI through the week...and that's why we stay a block away every year.
The Soup NYC Crew dropped a fat party at Dream Hotel (Day-Night). Change of Pace will always be a stop for me. Doc ripped it and Oliver $ just kept it going. Great weather and vibe for that one.
Soueil crew from SD just made my week...as they did last year. Love Ocean's Ten as a venue and musically just perfect true skool house...for househeads. NEVER had bad vibe at that party through the years and this year was no different.
The biggest LOWlight I saw and it was so VERY telling: Repour Bar had a great day-night lineup on Thursday 3/17. We chose to start our MMW there with Mes and JPG doing sunset sets in the courtyard. They were not there. HUH!?!?!?! We went back on Monday to chill and listen to some music by the pool. Music by ANY standards was not loud at all and about what you would expect from a daytime event. Hotel Mgt came out and told the DJ to turn in down!!!!!!
Actually heard the DJ say..."but our guests wont be able to hear the music." Boy was she right. That was enough...until I heard the same manager talking to a woman who probably just stepped off a Gulfstream. "I choose to stay at this hotel and South beach every year...and every year its so loud." UGH KMN...Its MMW/WMC shut up!
Regardless of sparse turn outs and parties changing venues (See Rvdioactive moving from SOBE to DTMIA last minute), our Music Week - Conference was enjoyable.
Said this was the last one for us, but I think I have one more! |

for us that have been clubbing for many years, no one I know goes anymore to MMW for fun. Too many other options.
It used to be that was the 1 time that year you could see DJ so-and-so... now its quite easy to see them in your hometown, Vegas, EDC-whatever, BPM, etc.
Things change and nothing wrong with that :)
Miami will always be a destination for MMW but not quite it was at its peak. |
