I'm right there with you buddy. I was definitely a hater back then, but I too find myself enjoying it more over the years. There were a lot of good releases that I didn't really pay attention to at the time and as you said Perry O'Neil in particular is pretty good production wise.

It's definitely held up better than some of the other trendy, emergent genres of those years. I wonder if the resentment towards McProg had less to do with the music itself, and more with the over-aggressive marketing that came with it. Not to mention the almost cult-like fanbase that developed around it. (hi, Tigerclaw!)

EDM has also held up, but that still doesn't mean it's not . Around the same time that Mcprog was in full swing, prog-psy was also becoming more popular (I made a mix around 2004, including some good non-Mcprog tracks). I never resented it, I just didn't like it and considered it too fluffy and a bit cheesy compared to the other stuff that was around. To each their own.

I meant in comparison to the other popular genres of the mid-'00s. I don't see many folks giving 'mnml' much reconsidered, reflective love these days.

Maybe nobody likes it on here, but for all I loathe it, minimal techno had a massive and lasting influence on modern house and techno. I've got loads of mates who get misty eyed with recollection of the minimal era. McProg was a comparatively miniscule vicissitude of a genre already in decline. The only reason most trance-heads remember it with increasing fondness is because the trancey-proggy pickings have only got slimmer in the intervening decade.
It wasn't all terrible, but most of McProg still sounds seriously lightweight compared to proper progressive. There were a couple of guys who were doing the twinkly melody + sidechained bass combo very well when it was still a new idea (IE: Luke Chable) but all that Schulz/Andy Moor/Probspot stuff is feeble.

I still love stuff like this but I recognize that it's not particularily sophisticated or anything (I wouldn't call it cheesy, it's just very blunt in the way it hits you over the head with the combination of buzzing bassline/twinkly melodies, but again, that's why I like it).

Also, if anyone didn't see it, I made a thread for this one last year. I literally had the idea to combine mcprog and techno in my head for years but never thought anyone would actually go ahead and do it. Nearly feel out of my chair when I first heard this.
