So as I mentioned in another thread, one of the big promises made by our soon-to-be Prime-Minister was to legalize Marijuana in a timely manner.
I believe it should be legalized for a number of reasons, but unlike the reasons I've been hearing about such as wasted effort in enforcing drug laws, the old alcohol vs pot debate, and the other argument that always pops up: "The government could tax it and make millions".
The biggest reason I want it legalized is so that more research can be done to ascertain whether or not it can help physically/mentally ill people when traditional therapies have failed them.
Your thoughts/stances?

I'm over 30 smoking pot was cool 12+ years ago. I could care less if it stays illegal or not. I would guess most people my age feel the same. Those who still do smoke it say it's treated legal anyways around these parts. Who really cares.
Imo the whole thing was to make young kids come vote. Nobody else gave a about that "issue".
Alex
Well I'm in your position (bit younger) and haven't smoked in years, so as far as casual pot smoking is concerned I don't care as much about that part.
I know our laws are fairly lax when it comes to pot, but people do still get arrested and stuff which should stop.
And yeah there are plenty of people who just don't care, but a lot of Canadians voted for Trudeau because of this issue, whether it was there primary concern or not.

Of course. CNN has already done a series showing the positive effects of marijuana on various ailments.

True dat. But I'm all for it if it helps people, and it's also helped my friend during his Bipolar depression phase.

Yeah I watched that, and liked it!
But don't you agree that if they legalized the damn stuff a lot more medical and pharmaceutical research could be done in order to help a lot more people?

Absolutely. That's what the series was getting at. I think the same goes for Iboga, but that won't happen anytime soon. They should be starting clinical trials in The Netherlands soon, though.

I can't talk about Canada specifically, but I am unsure that a substance's legal standing has much impact on its ability to be studied.

Well, I should have been more clear about that...
In that instance I was referring to the U.S. where banned substances are often not allowed to be studied as thoroughly as other things.

It does. Iboga was being studied in the US, but once it was rendered Schedule I, funding for the study (and trials) had ended.
Alex
I've read stuff that one part of the government has all the rights to study a drug, but at the same time are trying to control it. Sort of a conflict imo.
Edit: Here it is: http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2013-04/why-its-so-hard-scientists-study-pot
Could be crap though. I take most of what I read on the internet with a grain of salt.

I haven't smoked weed in years, but I'm all for legalising it, regulating it, and taxing it. It seems like a no-brainer to me. It's an easy income stream for the government, and will reduce wasted tax payer's money on petty "crimes" that are just mostly just possession for personal/recreational use. You can buy booze everywhere, but weed is still somehow this odd taboo that frightens everyone. It's silly.
Alex
Yeah, you see, in Canada our last PM had a very outdated view on the stuff and demonized it in really annoying Health Canada advertisements on TV.
So while it's possible to study it here in limited circumstances, the government was actively campaigning against it.
