Seems a little ridiculous to deride a scene that favours stereotypes whilst doing the exact same thing yourself. |
I'm not rallying against steretypes per se, we all do it, it helps catalogue the insane number of artists out there. I just think it's gone a bit too far in that direction. That said I do hate the self-satisfaction that comes with the stereotypes in the "socially conscious" clubbing sphere. I was listening to this documentary on RA about this whole experimental-queer-club scene and all the opaque concepts, the faux pseudo-radicalism and lack of self awareness made my skin crawl. And I do find the Black Madonna obnoxious, I see posts from her private FB pop up sometimes and all the self-satisfaction and complete derision of other people's viewpoints is gag worthy. It's obviously not the socially progressive message itself, it's how people say it.
And yeah, like I said her music is pretty appealing to a lot of people since it's just crowd-pleasing stuff but there's no way she would have just shot up in the top 10 without the insane media coverage that comes with her image.
@J, I wouldn't necessarily disagree, but I think now most of the people new to the poll fill some kind of branding niche or demand in the market. Or they just strong-armed their way into the poll with fake accounts or paid social-media services
I read RA pretty regularily and they certainly don't create trends the way maybe Pitchfork does. They used to do it more in the past but I think the intentionally toned it down. If they cover something it's pretty late most of the time because there's already a scene going and/or there's demand for that kind of sound. And they don't tend to dwell on most things, the last two things they really shoved down people's throats were PC music and that whole Lisbon sound and I don't see that anywhere near the polll since most of their readership hated that :p If it were Pitchfork it probably would have worked but in the end RA's readership is quite conservative so there's this weird disconnect with their editiorial direction right now. |

And that same article describes her as "queer identifying". Get with the pansexual, gender-fluid times, mate! |

| Also only seen like 5 people on the list this year. Awesome that Mike Servito and Sonja Moonear made it. Still no Derek Plaslaiko and Maayan Nidam, though. I don't get it, it seems like the hype bros out there always have time to vote for this stupid . |

| I saw him in Brazil like two years ago during the world cup at this party they threw sponsored by adidas, and even though he only played for like 4 - 5 hours, he slayed and it was pretty easy to see the why of the hype. He's just really ing good. Really good taste, plays bombs, good crowd reader, he's just pro. |

| In all of this discussion I think you guys are undermining the influence some of these promoters and media people have on the whole thing in a global scale. This sort of thing has always been political. Dixon is just a talented dude who's really good at his job, but for us who listen we can probably name like 5 other people who aren't even on the list that can play better sets than him on a given night. |

Dixon is obviously a good DJ, around here he's been a cult DJ for like 15 years, a lot longer than the current Innervisions hype. But he probably plays too much of that slo mo emo house crap now. I don't know though, never seen him.
Live act poll is there now -

I've only seen Mandar and Karenn this year. Mandar were quite good but not as good as I had hoped for since some of these guys material is mindbogglingly good. Karenn were pretty decent, quite banging but not all that harsh and industrial. A few too many boring parts with just a kick and hat though. They actually went quite trance-y in the end with massive synths and strings, wish that part would have lasted longer. |

I saw him B2B with Ame a couple of years ago and it was honestly one of the most boring things I've ever heard in a club. I was there with my girlfriend and her friend, and I just left them and wandered despondently in a circle around the venue, trying to find someone to talk to. Eventually at about 5am she found me sat down outside in the smoking area. We went home shortly after that, but it was one of those unpleasant clubbing experiences where you're basically trapped in the club and the music is putting a massive downer on you.
I'll give him the benefit of the doubt because I have heard some good sets of his online, and obviously it was 50% Ame, but the flow was waaaay off that night. They were pretty much letting tracks play out to the end then mixing the next thing in right from the start. Playing a lot of utterly boring groove tracks and then every 20-30 minutes there'd be one pretty Innervisions type track. It was all over the place. Absolute dog. |

| i voted rob hood and stingray. i can't remember if i put helena hauff. as always the best sets are usually from the guys who are lower on the list or who don't make the cut. not a fan of the top 10 |
