I just arrived in Montreal. Doesn't James live here? I could see his unsound app.

What are you doing in MTL IGK?

Yep the frequency for sure. It's supply and demand, so you have to follow baby's lead or else you won't produce enough milk (breasts are actually amazing, whoa...and the relationship between baby and breasts/breastmilk, also whoa).

When babies have growth spurts they will cluster feed to ensure you produce enough milk to meet their coming needs. This can be a few feedings really close together over a couple hours...or for SEVERAL hours, as I have been enduring for the past week. I'm talking straight feeding from about 5pm-10/11pm EVERY NIGHT.

5 hours straight? In one go? Forgive me if I profess my ignorance but I've never heard of someone breastfeeding that long at once. Why is it necessary to feed that long? Isn't baby getting plenty of milk in the first 30 minutes or so?

I highly suggest you and/or your wife downloads the Wonder Weeks app. It's all about specific, predictable developmental "leaps" that all babies go through, so that when it's happening to you and your child, you at least know what's happening is normal and can find ways to cope. Lol.

Noted. I like that the task of parenting has so many associated apps now. Technology!

Yes, in one go. It is more than common and very normal. As I said, it's supply and demand, so when going through a growth spurt babies will suckle continuously to ensure the breasts are going to be making enough milk to meet the baby's coming needs. It takes a few days for the breasts to supply the amount of milk that the baby's suckling signals them they need to.

It isn't just about the AMOUNT of milk either, it's the type of milk. The composition of breast milk is different throughout the day...it gets fattier toward the evening/at night and has hormones in it that helps babies to sleep. The fattier milk is the real good stuff, but it doesn't just pour out of the breasts. Also, breast milk is digested quickly, and babies' tummies are small, hence they can just suckle at the tit for hours, lolololol.

Babies also don't just suckle at the breast for food, they do it for comfort as well (this is called non-nutritive suckling) - which is just as important in establishing milk supply. The more a baby suckles, the better a mother's milk supply will be. Babies will suckle just to be close to mom, and why not? It is the easiest way to soothe/comfort a baby, and to get them to sleep too!

Again, this is why it's so important to just follow baby's lead and feed on demand in the first few weeks - it's all about establishing supply.

Have to consider that babies are just figuring it out, as is mom. Before breastfeeding is well established, it can take up to 40 minutes for a baby to get a full feed. As they get better at it, they become more efficient feeders and a feed might only take 10 minutes.

The cluster feeding behaviour doesn't carry on forever. Only in those first few weeks, and again during growth spurts (but I hear not in the same insane way as when establishing supply).

If you wife plans to breastfeed, I strongly suggest she connect with a lactation consultant. :)

edit: I should add - breasts never literally "empty". They produce milk as long as baby is suckling. The "emptier" the breast, the more milk they will produce to keep up. And you cannot over-breastfeed a baby.

So, the condensed version is that, if I want the wife's breasts to make longer, more frequent appearances, I simply need to suckle them more. Well damn. All this time...who knew? BRB

Yikes. I'm sure we will be doing that. I would rather not go the formula route if we don't have to.

I certainly don't envy you ladies :wtf:

Breastfeeding really is the best, for so many reasons. Get all the support you can! Best of luck to you guys. :)

Yes, 4 day excursion. We had a long travel day, dinner at Jardin Nelson then to outdoor club by the port.

Random observations:
What's up with Canadian money, it's interesting but made out of plastic. Wtf. Our money maybe bland but it smells and feels better.

Mtl people like to wear black clothing.

Long weekend starting yesterday (hooray for Independence Day!), decided to find out who Jack Bauer is and binge watched 24 with my dad. I like the parallel story lines, but we like Designated Survivor much better.

Why don't more people talk about Designated Survivor anyway? It's like Homeland meets Borgen, and a bit saccharine at times, but I like the idealism. Sometimes it makes me so proud to be American I forget I'm not :p

Come to Brazil! Half our bills are made out of plastic, and the other half isn't. Consistency isn't exactly our forte :D

Plastic money is the best money. Waterproof, for starters. Some nice colours, too. We're down with that here in Oz as well. You guys in the US will catch up eventually :p

Now let's keep talking about boobs :o

We just got plastic fivers in the UK. They feel waaay too much like a receipt if you stuff your hand in your back pocket.
