There's actually very little statistical support for the safety benefits of wearing a helmet. A lot of the data suggests that they cause as many neck injuries as they prevent head injuries, that they encourage motorists to drive more carelessly around the wearer, and even that pedestrians are more likely to suffer head injuries than cyclists.

Not to mention studies indicating negative behavioural adaptation among cyclists themselves - biking more carelessly because they feel even safer wearing a helmet than they normally do.
Just about nobody down here in the Netherlands wears a helmet in ordinary biking traffic. Everytime I see someone wearing one I tend to wonder whether they're American tourists or immigrants or something is wrong with them.
Apparently about a third of cyclists injured in any kind of traffic accident will have head/brain injury, I'm reading about some 3,000+ cases per year.
No-one's going to wear cycling helmets here though. You may need a bit of luck though once in a while, like when you fall off your bike in front of an approaching bus.
It's probably true that pedestrians are more likely to suffer head injures especially here in Amsterdam - cyclists are generally selfish arseholes who will look you in the eyes while they try to go right through you, myself being the exception.

Not wearing a helmet when cycling is a statement. It lets people know you don't think too highly of yourself. My parents made me wear one when I was three, but I punched several holes in it with a screwdriver, and after that they let me ride without one. At that point it was probably some sort of statement from my parents too.
But, since there exist people who can hit their nuts on a pole painted red and white while jogging, I guess it's good we have such a thing as helmets.

Well if you aren’t biking very fast and going a leisurely speed in a bike friendly town then odds are good you won’t need one.
However, since I’m going 15-20 mph regularly on a road bike, not wearing one would not only be downright unsafe, you would look hilariously out of place. Accidents on road bikes happen quickly, frequently, and without warning. I have witnessed two and been in two in just 3 months. I would not be typing this to you if I wasn’t wearing one.
But yes, those pesky helmets make you look silly. Protecting your brain isn’t a very high priority, especially when the contents inside aren’t very valuable!

Thick skin or not, my helmet certainly saved me from being out in the Kentucky countryside with a bleeding brain and no amount of statistics on head injuries will convince me that a helmet shouldn't always be worn when cycling. Same reason I always wear my seatbelt.
