Yeah. The problem is, of course, that by now there is a group of internet pundits that has turned this "culture war" into an enormously profitable profession and whose direct interest it is to keeping stirring the flames. Not only that but the political and social establishment loves these kind of cultural proxy wars since people expunging all their energy on debates around bathroom laws means there is no debate around more pressing issues like economic disenfranchisement.

But it is extremly frustrating. Another example of this kind of overreaction would be the anglosphere's liberal left just completely waiving away serious anti-semitism or anti-democraticism from muslims because of concerns over islamophobia.

Again, I have to interject here. There is context missing from this line of thinking. When the right constantly tries to use false equivalencies to make their points, this type of thinking feeds right into their agenda. It's about people's attentions spans, though there might be some examples of this liberal "waving away" of prejudice, I think it's mostly about prioritizing. Given the full context of the current world it's more pressing to worry about anti-Semitism being propagated inside the western hemisphere than outside of it. There is nuance missing.

I wasn't talking about anti-semitism in the arab world. I was talking about anti-semitism by muslims IN the western world. You might not realize this if you don't live in Europe but it's a serious issue. If you'd try walking around with a Kippa here in Berlin Neukölln, you'd get harassed and probably beaten up within a couple of hours. Not that anti-semitism by non-muslims doesn't exist, mind you, it's still widespread, but currently it's not nearly as aggressive and violent. Jews are actively migrating away because of islamic anti-semitism. The type of Islam taught in central European mosques is also increasingly radicalizing and it was never particularily liberal. There is currently ONE liberal mosque in Berlin that is openly tolerant towards gays and they receive death threats from more radical muslims on a weekly, if not daily basis and need permanent police protection.

If you "prioritize" this away you are handing the right actual, serious issues on which they can justify their bigotry on.

I see what you're saying now. I was talking specifically about the middle east and not taking the immagration issues of Europe into account.

Prioritizing is just about picking your battles, certainly you would agree that some issues are more pressing than others. These problems dont get fixed overnight like that.

I've aired my cynicism about academia before, but I'm still amazed by how much liberal media discourse and academia have been industrialised, and both work in very similar ways. Find a specialism that is suitably topical and/or politically loaded to guarantee interested publishers, develop a vaguely postmodern critical framework that allows any subject matter to be shoved through the meat grinder, and proceed to churn out a never ending factory line of articles, essays and books "problematising" or "reappraising" anything floating through the current cultural zeitgeist. You end up with a hypertrophic discourse around certain subjects that blows them out of all proportion and, ultimately, outside reference.

If you can identify as anything you want, and people have to respect it, why can't i identify as an offensive bigot?

Seems hypocritical.
