Strong rumours there'll be a full national lockdown here within a week. The numbers are extremely bad. We're exceeding the reasonable worst case scenario. From Monday pubs and bars will have to shut in my city. You can't visit or mix with other households.

Surely to Zeus, you're not doing worse than this cluster/show of a "democracy," are you Jack? I use "you're" and "you" in the plural, of course.

I always find it striking what the Gulf stream does for us here in Europe. I'm further up north than Anchorage right now and buddy, it's warmer here right now than it it is where you are.

I agree...both ocean and wind patterns are amazing. When we get the prolonged single digit stuff, it's when the Jet Stream deviates south and the "polar vortex" dips down and settles on top of us.

Edit: just realized the clock on that thermometer is reversed, lol. That should have been 6:45 PM.

If you pro rata our deaths to your population we're pretty much doing just as badly as each other, although France and Spain aren't giving up the chase.

Yeah, it's still about 15C here during the day, whatever that translates to in "F". Which is just as well really, because my house is over a hundred years old and retains heat with all the efficiency of a cigarette butt in a snow drift.

I do have a lovely wood burner stove, though, quite similar to Zoso's, and a basement full of eminently burnable wood left by the previous owners.

First fire of the season is under way. Nothing big, like a fully packed stove for an overnight burn, but enough to kill the chill and knock out the "dust smell".

My weekend plans, like usual as of late, consist mostly of catching up on the sleep I didn't get during the week.

Personal gripes aside, the big news in the U.S. is of course the election next week, but it's pretty boring because 95% of the population has had their minds made up for at least three years. All that remains is to figure out how many of each side actually show up to vote.

Locally in DC not even that matters, since the number of Trump supporters here to begin with only number a few dozen, and most of them live in the White House. More interesting is a ballot initiative to quasi-legalize hallucinogenic mushrooms. A couple of days ago, our mayor, Muriel Bowser, announced that she was planning to vote against it. Yes, you read that right... Bowser opposes magic mushrooms. I couldn't even make this up.

You know what's mental? As a Brazilian, I know you're concerned, but it almost sounds like you're bragging: we've had more deaths per capita than you guys since late May, and our president has actively pushed against lockdowns. We needed them, badly.

Our governor (we have no mayor) started off on the right foot, and Brasília used to be the gold standard for corona prevention from March up until... May? Then he realised it was hurting his image among Bolsonaro supporters and just opened the gates as much as it was politically feasible. Nearly a tenth of the population in the Federal District has been diagnosed with the disease already.

You might be in the anti-lead for now, Marcus, but I suspect winter will put us northern hemisphere nations back on the podium of catastrophe. Although I believe Belgium are already the undisputed champions of per capita deaths.

What's really annoying is we're still doing almost as badly as Brazil and we've been through a lockdown. By now the Overton Window on deaths has shifted so much that a sizeable percentage of the country would probably bite your hand off for Brazil's death rate if it meant less restrictions.
