Iv'e recently bumped into this new format, which can be found in the hub BTW (search for jon_the_dentist-mercury__push_harder_mix).
First of all- it's much smaller then MP3 formats, files are up to 4MB instead of 10MB+.
Second and most important- the quality sounds just the same!
So why don't people start using this format more? are there any known downsides to it?
//edit: err, posted it in music discussion by mistake... some mod move it to chillout plz. |

Ogg has been around for quite some time but never really caught on .. I first heard about it 2+ years ago i think :)
I guess file sizes aren't as much of a concern as they were when MP3 was first developed; many more people have high speed connections, and harddrive space is massive + cheap!
MP3 won't be around forever, but I'd say it will dominate the music industry for the next 10-15 years... |

Errr... no.
The best thing about OGG is that it's open source... and 128kbps OGG is equal to 256kbps mp3 :) |

| Are there any converters out there that can convert .mp3 files to .ogg, and vice versa? I'm too lazy to look it up myself on shareware. |

| Damnit, I hate it when someone beats me to the punch! Thanx for the info. NYx. I'm downloading the codec right now. |

| I wouldn't recommend converting ogg to mp3 or vice versa, but ogg is a good format on its own. |

10x for all the info guys, seems like there are no downsides to this format then(?) :conf:
If that's the case- I'm really confused why didn't it catch on... |

The *ogg Format was designed to replace the *MP3 format. Fraunhofer, the creator of the *mp3 format, was supposededly going to start collecting royalties for the usage of mp3's (Though I don't know how he could possibly do it). Independant programers got together and made *ogg's to replace the *mp3's so that no one will be forced to pay these royalties. The *ogg format is supposed to be free for anyone to change or add to it; while MP3 is not (Open source, if you will).
The *ogg format is designed (in theory) to reduce the size of songs by varying the bitrate of the encoding. But the *ogg format never caught on, and programmers never developed it to the point where it was substantially smaller than the *mp3.
One should also note that by encoding your *mp3's into *ogg's you will lose some sound quality. Everytime you convert a song into another format you will lose "some" quality. ie. From your CD; to *wav on your harddrive; from *wav to *mp3; and from *mp3 to *ogg. If you really want *ogg files and don't want to sacrafice too much quality, you should convert your tunes to .ogg format directly from it's source (CD or vinyl, whatever the case maybe).
Winamp 2.81 has all the plug-ins you need to convert *mp3's, *ogg's, *wav's, *wma's, etc. If you need Fraunhofer's PROFFESSIONAL version of his MP3 codec, let me know. |
