getting a non-trance crowd into a trance set is hard as hell. They will most likely start chanting "PLAY HIP HOP!" or some crap like that the second you drop some trance.

Don't wanna scare you, but it's probably what will happen.

Start out with the stuff that they want to hear, then gradually work your way into trance.

**WARNING** This might involve playing Sandstorm or Castles in the Sky.

Just stick to commercial trance/techno to start... stuff like Darude, Ian van Dahl, Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, Moby, etc. And if they like it, then just explode into epic trance ;)

I tried to get my mates into trance as well. I did exactly what Mosaic suggested. I mixed them a set, starting with "Iio - Rapture (Riva mix)" and, after a coulpe of well known tunes, I had mixed some quality trance. When I played the CD, they heard the first tunes and stuff, but nobody was dancing, because even though they had already heard the melody before, all that stuff together was kinda new for them. Later on, they asked me to give them something harder.

So I decided to make a "rave" party for them. I had mixed Drum'n'bass, acid techno, ordinary techno and some trance. The first 30 minutes (in which I played drum'n'bass) were incredible, it felt great. They had gone mental and I was really glad that they were enjoying the set. However, after 30 min, they seemed to be exhausted and, when I asked whether I should play more drum'n'bass or change it to something else (like techno), they had asked me to play some Brazilian regional music instead. Well, what was I to do? I mean, they heard the music. Some of them liked the stuff (I went back home without my cd's because I had lent them all), but not everybody. I showed them what electronic music was. You'll never be able to convert everyone into it, even because we're not here to convert anyone: people were given free will, you can't force them to like what you like.

Anyway, if I were to play trance for them again, I wouldn't play anything cheesy, and I wouldn't play only anthem/epic trance either. The more different tunes you get, the less bored they'll be ;)

I played for US and british teens into rap once...

all u need to do is play kernkraft 400 or sandstorm and once they're jumping play whatever you like so long as it's hard

you should only break into techno near the end of the night, though...open up with rap and all

What to play for non-Trance crowd?
hip hop, R&B, Teen pop.... that's about all you can do, there is no help for these people, are they want are the crap on the radio, if you play them anything else all they will do is wine like a baby all night, so don't bother.

Im getting a djing job here at school (Virginia Tech) at this new club here and when in doubt, TURN UP THE BASS . . . .and play some house and breakx. Nice Latin House music will make the girls take off their shirts. Try it.

Good luck.
