| There is a difference between actually REALLY learning the material and getting a good mark in the course. I usually study by solving previous finals and assignments. Looking at sample solutions is also a very good idea. That's the best way to study if you want to get a good mark, but this way you don't really learn the material well. |

well said, that's what I did, if you can find an older test or final that would be a great asset, ask around, the profs tent to put similar if not the same question on test in the future, or at least similar...
ask the prof for previous test, I got some tests like that and it helped |

Here's what I do, in this order. Note that this will not work nearly as well for "subjective" subjects like English, but it's great for math/sciences/engineering:
1. Do all the problems that were assigned as homework, especially the optional ones! This is what the profs think will separate the people who care from the people who don't... perhaps they've got a reason for that...
2. Go through the midterm, hopefully you've got the answers, make sure you've got every question right (applies to above, also).
3. Write any past finals you can find, starting from the most recent (if questions are going to be repeated, it's probably from -older- exams).
And, two miscellaneous things that've worked for me:
4. Study with a friend, in a place with a relaxed vibe (note - I don't mean study hall, we tend to do this at Tim Hortons until they kick us out :toothless It's great if you can find a somewhat-upbeat place where tons of people are studying, at Timmy's there are lots of people to keep us focussed but also lots of babes if we need a distraction. :stongue: ).
5. Try to do an entire problem set/exam without looking at the answers until you're done - it'll help you catch stupid careless mistakes that you wouldn't notice otherwise.
I think neither me nor my friend ever get less than 80% in a course with this, so it must count for something... |

| My recommendation is to get out of your place. Go study somewhere else..library or student centre. That way...you realized that you have went outta ur house...gotten ready, so you will have to study for such an effort put. Another thing is..you'll see others studying there..and that would motivate you more to study as well, away from your distracting home. Schedule yourself too...leave out like 2 hours so you can use the comp for TA and another glorious online activities hehe, and the rest..you can put out for working out..eating..screwing girls and studying. BUt always make studying your #1 priority. |

since we're on the topic. I haev a VERY hard time waking up in the mornings early..anyone can recommend anything? I tried sleeping early and stuff..but the earliest I can wake up is at 9.
I used to be able to wake up by 7 latest without an alarm clock...which was in the summer time..and previous. Ever since this school year has started...my time has been totally shifted :( |

Hmm, try having 3 loud alarm clocks strategically placed in your room so you HAVE to get out of bed to turn them off, and set them so they all go off 30 seconds apart.
(Oh wait, that didn't work for me...)
Seriously though, it all comes down to habit, you get used to getting up at a certain time. Only way to break the cycle is to come up with some sort of motivation, get someone to make you coffee, or see if there's a good TV show on before you want to be up, or something... if you have a girlfriend then there's no excuse for not being able to come up with an idea here. ;) If you're alone then maybe you could arrange a wake-up call or something, just something to FORCE you out of bed, because otherwise you will subconsciously sleep in until you KNOW you HAVE to be up. |
