I definatly agree...
I just started learning how to DJ and I think the computer was a great way to learn the basics. But hell yea, its totally gay if i did stuff like that for money. What am I going to do? Take my whole computer and load up traktor or something and mix at a party? Hell no, its definatly fun to play around with and make some mix CDs for yourself...
Now that I learned the basics and started getting decent I want to pick up tables, a nice mixer, and alot of vinyl! It's just something about using a mouse to DJ makes me feel weird. Heheh... |

Just had to response to this one....
What is this rubbish about stealing songs from people? You better face up to the fact that if people didnt download these songs, they certainly wouldn't buy them, they would probably not even have heard of the artist.
Its established not everyone has the money to spend on stacks of vinyl, and not everyone can justify spending money on decks and equipment. It's completely unfair to make those kind of comments against MP3 "DJs."
If you think the artists like Tiesto, PVD etc lose money from Mp3s, you should also check your facts. The money these guys make is from doing live gigs/sets. They actually make very little thru vinyl sales, and they don't expect to.
Its a well known fact that the famous DJs are amazingly overpaid, making more in one night than many people make in a year. I have the respect for the guys but my eyes are wide open as well.
If people want to download mp3s (largely of music that is hard to find, let alone afford all of it) that is fine.
If people want to play with mixing (who would otherwise have no interest in it) then fine. Anything that promotes
the trance genre, and lets people appreciate the music more, and most importantly have fun. It's all good.
To the critics:
If you don't like it - don't do it.
To the MP3 DJs:
Enjoy your music, experiment and have fun. |

i don't think there are any mp3 DJ's who are playing a set in a disco or anywhere else or they buy the records/CD's.
Most MP3 DJ's are mixing @ home just for fun and maybe to learn to become a DJ.
I'm a MP3 DJ @ the moment and it's going better and better. So now I'm going to buy 1 turntabel and off-course a few vynil's.
I think the MP3 DJ-ing is even better for music section because there are a lot of people like me who got there first DJ experience with MP3's.
If you don't have this first experience you won't buy that expensive tabels and stuff because you don't know if you've got he feeling or even like it. |

umm...well, that's what clubs are for and raves...you go for the music....That's why it's underground music, cause you can't hear it anywhere else....lucky for the internet, or half there people wouldn't even know what Trance is....That's what the music is about bringing people together....Back in the day before the internet, and all this file sharing, clubbing and raving was a more special thing, because you would here the latest at the club and/or party....... |

Well some people totally misread a few posts here.
I don't have a problem with people downloading MP3s, honestly I couldn't care less what you do at home. Yet as soon as you use those MP3s to play at a gig (through whatever form, be it burned CDs or straight off computer) you're basically disrespecting every artist and DJ who pay for the music they're playing. And that I can't stand ... so yeah that was the only point I was trying to make ...
Please read the posts more carefully before you decide to fall back on flaming, name calling, and vulgarity. Well I guess threads of this sort help me realize who the mature people on this forum are.

Ok, i have read all your comments and here is mine:
my name is Dj J, i´m from Mexico and i make parties where i mix mp3 (and very bad), but the main reazon of my parties is to bring mexican people the trance, electronic, psico.., progressive music, i dont get paid for this.... in fact.... I pay for everything, even drinks, if people pay something in this parties is to reduce some of the stuff around the event (place, equipment, waiters, etc.) but never to me, I think this is my contribution as an mp3 Dj to the artist, here in Mexico, this kind of music is just beeing introduced and i dont pay for the music im playing, but if i can make this people listen to this music, thy are gonna love it and i bet they will pay for a great CD of the artist with the music i let them know. and the second reazon is to have a great time, dance and enjoy.......
this is my position as a mp3 Dj (i think i cant call myself a dj...cos the only thing i do is play great music trying to syncronize tunes and beats and i do it badly but people does have a great time whith me)
thx (please be patient with my english......remember my language is spanish)

This is an interesting thread..
here is my $0.02 on mp3 djing..
I think it's a great! I use VTT to mix, and it is very similar to real tech12s, especically when you set the pitch sliders to the same as techs. The jog wheels work similar to handling a record, the 3 channel mixer doesn't sound that good(especially the EQ), but not too bad..
I got the software for free, and hundreds if not thousands of trance and techno songs to mix with also for free.
this software and the availability of trance on the net has gotten me into DJing. I really want to get into it for real now, I have bought about 10 awesome trance records of the 'net, and I plan on buying a pair of Tech12s and a Pioneer DJM600 as soon as I can afford it(first I need to buy my girlfriend an engagement ring though).
I make mix CDs for myself, and just have fun mixing tracks together, it's great, I love trance, I love to mix it, to listen to it, to dance to it, to talk about it, to make it(well try anyway, with other programs I obtained illegally for free, fruity loops, and reason).
And, I have used VTT to mix tracks together at little get togethers at my house, people love that . and I would use VTT to mix at a real rave no matter how big(if they'd let me, and hopefully it doesn't crash :D )
Now, here is where I draw the line. I would not ask for any money for this, because I did not support the artists by buying the record. neither would I ask for money if I was using CDs I burned with mp3s I got for free. Nor would I if I stole oakenfolds record bag(drool) and played those.. it isn't fair, because I didn't pay for it, why should I get money back for it?
well.. maybe a few bucks, or some free drinks at the bar, but nothing more than that..
anyway, that's where I stand. |

Sorry for being so forward here, but I have a beef with Mp3 Dj's. First off, they mix Mp3's which sound like on a good PA or Club system.....Second off, Djing on your computer is ing week, unless it's your own songs that you made.....And last but not least....And this is the big one, the one that really gets me goin.....Is that you are killing the scene.....You wannabe Dj's downloading off the net like you deserve it, not supporting anyone....You don't pay for the music, probably not even the software, and who does that support huh? you rip off the Mp3's from the net, the artist/producers don't get paid, the record companies don't get paid, and next thing you know Electronic music starts sounding like again cause wankers downloaded it a never paid a cent for it.....
*disclaimer* If you buy Cds/Vinyl and record to Mp3 and DJ, then nothing wrong with that.....or if you make your own songs and DJ that way...that's cool to.....or if you just make mix cd's for yourself then that's fine.....the people I am targeting are the ones that make money off of other peoples music without paying for it..... *end rant*
*thanks for letting me get that off my chest, I needed to after what I saw last weekend (long story)* |
oooh...glad i wasn't qualified to be on the list. i only use to for personal amusement and such...well i do burn some for myself...but thats it.... yeah i hear what you're saying man.... |

Question:
Are you only fighting using music DJ's aquired for free and playing it for money, or are you fighting the actual use of MP3 DJ's?
What if an veteran DJ rips his entire collection to his HD and uses his computer for mixing? Is that euqaly wrong?
I'm quite ignorant to all these things.

OK I'm going to say this:
I've done mixes on ACID, stuff to play @ work, or just to listen to. I've never sold one. I never charge people for a CD, if they want one.
***DJ'ing with Mp3's is ATROCIOUS.***
NO BODY should be expecting to call themselves a DJ by clicking their mouse and using VTT or something like that.
| quote: | | i think that producers and record companies are rich enough |
Buddy let me ask you something: If you had a job and you only got paid 1/8th of what you should have been paid, would you like that job?????? This is somewhat of a poor analogy because real DJ's do it for the love of the music and not the money, but regardless, the money helps them do more. How do you think artists buy studios? Do you think Paul Van Dyk would be able to give away a million dollars if everyone played mp3's? I'm even against spinning with CD players, regardless of wheather you purchased them or not. A real DJ uses vinyl, and for all you people who complain you can't find records or your broke, get a job, and get a credit card. I work, and go to school, and still find time to practice spinning.
The only time I would stop using my records is if I couldn't buy them anymore.
Mp3's are for listening, not for spinning. You can't even "spin" a bloody MP3!!!!!
This topic always gets me agravated.
I'm out before my stupid netzero expires. See, I can't afford internet b/c I spend all my money on records :P
Peace. |

playing songs that you dont have the rights to is just wrong. Yeah, sometimes I play MP3s for songs that I downloaded, but almost never do I not support the artist. If I like the song enough to play it at a show, then i think I just should probly have the CD.
sometimes I dont have the right rmx on a Cd, so the net is usefull.
FastDjMP3, you havent bought a CD sine 1999? ...and you wonder why the labels are getting upset over file sharing, I always used the net as an exploration tool, if I find something I like that I can get, ill usually buy it. Now say I cant find it, or its backordered, well thats when having the MP3 comes in handy. |
