I want to loose some fat, maybe 15 lbs definitly more but 15 lb would be great. Does this diet work? I heard a lot about it, and say u can lose 30 your first month easily! Can some users or former users of this diet help me out? And do you need to purchase the book?

i've heard it doesn't work from people who have tried it. Just do what i do to stay fit and do pushups and situps every nite. Then for strength training i lift weights. I'm satisfied.

yeah i do that but im a chocoholic u see and the atkins diet got those chocolcate treats ur allowed to have hrhrhr

Doctors in the states recently tested every damn losing weight book in the country and one book came above all others....my uncle gave me the book and it does work.

The Adkins diet works and it doesn't work. You will lose weight only if you STRICTLY adhere to the program. However, the dropout rate is sky high (>95% or so), JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER DIET KNOWN TO MAN! So the bottom line is, you're doomed to fail on this diet.

That's not good, because you lose weight very rapidly at first. Unfortunately, the majority of weight lost is water weight, which is easily put back on when you fall off the program and eat your normal load of carbs. again (and as I said, you will fail unfortunately). The process of eating protein, veggies, and fat does stimulate certain biochemical reactions in your body that cause the water weight to be eliminated, but they are not necessarily good reactions. One such reaction is called ketoacidosis, which is the breakdown of proteins in your body, resulting in a loss of muscle, bone, and organ mass. This occurs because the body's first resource for energy (ATP), which is derived primarily from sugars (carbohydrates) is depleted. Consequently, the body starts looking for other resources for energy. Yes, it does start to draw upon fat, but it also draws upon protein when needed. The reaction can also be very stressful on your liver, which can lead to liver damage.

As a former personal trainer, I've known a number of people that have attempted this diet, and all have failed. The most adverse reactions have come from those who attempt their normal exercise routine while on the diet. Talk about a Bonk! You don't realize just how difficult it is to stay away from carbs! A few people I've known literally go bonkers because of it. And they should. Your body needs carbs, just like it needs the other food groups.

Dr. Adkins created this diet for the sole purpose of helping cardiac rehab. patients recover from heart attacks (he also applied his diet to stroke patients). While it works well for these extreme cases of individuals in need of a quick means of recovery (it's still debateable as to whether this diet is good for heart attack sufferers), it should have never been intended for the everyday Joe Blow. What's more, until recently, there was not one piece of published data that Dr. Adkins has produced on his work. Only one study that was published last month has confirmed the success of the Adkins diet compared to a placebo group, and even that study is being highly debated.

However, current research has taken bits and pieces from this diet, and coupled it with sound research. Much of what is known about dieting boils down to a person's metabolism. You ever notice a real skinny guy who eats like a pig, yet doesn't gain any weight? Or how about a big guy who eats a normal healthy diet, but gains 5 lbs. per week? It all has to do with metabolism. The more active a person is, the higher their metabolism is, which results in a higher caloric expenditure (burning more calories each day). So a person will burn more calories if he gets up and moves around more throughout the day than sitting on his/her ass. That increases your resting metabolic rate. Ironically, you also increase your metabolism through eating! So that's why people say "don't skip your meals", because it actually helps you burn calories. That's not to say you should eat 24/7; watching what you eat is important, as well as when you eat it. Since your metabolism is highest during the day, this is the best time to eat the highest percentage from all 4 food groups. However, since your metabolism slows down going into the night, it may not be as beneficial to eat a tone of carbs. Since your metabolism slows down at night, carbohydrates do not get broken down for an energy source as readily, and become stored reserves (they're converted into fat). At night is the best time to consume more protein and veggies. And portion sizes do matter unfortunately. We guys have this amazing ability to turn off the innervoice coming from our stomachs, telling us it's full. Try to listen to your body more, and don't overconsume.

Lastly, you gotta exercise. It's so funny how many books and diet plans leave this point out, or at least minimize the importance of exercise. Quite honestly, it pisses the hell out of me. You wonder why America is so frickin fat, and why kids are so damn overweight now. Exercise not only burns calories immediately, but it also helps increase your daily metabolic rate as well! Not just any exercise; a balance between resistance exercise (weights) and cardio has consistently shown to give the best results in research studies. There are a plethora of exercise regimes out there ("Hefe, what is a plethora?"). But in general, 3-5x/week of exercise, including at least 2 weight workouts, and 3 cardio workouts. Yes, both can fall into the same workout.

So to summon:
- Adkins diet sucks. It's a guaranteed failure, so don't waste your time
- Watch what you eat - avoid eating too many fatty foods (fried stuff esp.), cut down on the carbs at night, and watch your portion of foods.
- Exercise. You don't do it, forget about losing weight. Don't even bother.
- Give yourself a day out of the week to eat whatever the hell you want.
- Don't smoke too much weed. That'll blow the whole plan to !
(but why most chronics I know are rails I can't figure out. Maybe because they spend all their cash flow on weed, not food.)

You're trying to make this a habit, not some stupid diet. What you really want to do is learn how to make this a part of your life so you can look and feel healthier for good. Diets don't do this. Making this a habit is what's important.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go grab a McDonald's for lunch.

I lost 39 lbs.

Too bad I was 155 lbs before I got sick.

This was 6 years ago - i'm back to go ol' 155 again.

my fat auntie does it for month at a time peroids
she loses weight every time, but always gains it within a few weeks of quitting.
Also it isn't recommended children under the age of 18 diet in this way, as huge consmuption of fats and no carbohydrates can damage the growing body

MisterOpus1's first statements were correct. It only works if you stick to it strictly. And people rarely do. I did it for two weeks and lost 15 pounds. But then I couldnt stick to it and feel back to my normal routine. I just cant imagine not being able to eat all the things you arent supposed to for the rest of my life. I try to cut down on carbs but not elimiate them. The only way to lose weight is to change what you do every day. Whether that is work out, eat differently, or whatever...you have to make a complete change and stick to it.

It will work if you stick to it. But you may be setting yourself up for failure. If you want to be introduced to healthier eating and working out, you should check out "Body for Life" by Bill Phillips.

That would be a good intro because you'll learn the basics of working out (and cardio), while eating 5-6 meals a day (incl. supplementation). Basically for food, you eat 1 portion of carbs and 1 portion of protein, then add some veggies. Do that 6 days a week, and on your off day eat 20 lbs of cheese if you like, cuz it won't do a thing to you.

All the while working out (ie 3 days of cardio, and 3 days of weights).

I beg to differ. I believe the Atkins diet does work.I'm not saying is the healthiest I've seen it work for people and myself.I lift weights everyday so, it's a bit eaiser for me. Although I don't call it the Atkins. He's lucky to get credit for it. This was a diet used by bodybuilders for years and years. I usually bulk up in the winter then go on a protein only diet for the summer. It really does work but you must workout or run for the best results. If you do like I do. Start easy first. lower some carbs. Then go lower and lower. If you get to a point where you need carbs try to eat them before 1:00pm, but not too much. Also allow a day where you get in some carbs. Probbaly once a week if you want. You don't want to stay on this diet for too long. Sooner or later increase your carbs SLOWLY but not too much. Until you feel comfortable. See where that takes you, but most people see nice results.
