Enough American bashing.. The American economy keeps Canada alive.

(and of course no one took notice)

So I shall bring to light the subject of debate on the U.S economy. R.J, woudln't being a U.S/Can citizen open your eyes to the actual dominance (piggy bag style) we ACTUALLY have going here? At what point does the U.S inflence turn to abuse (in regards to the Canadian economy). It "keeps us alive"? lol I'm not that left wing but I'm not stupid enough to believe that. The U.S economy simply put, "runs the show", and they will pretty much do anything in their power to keep it that way. (as any super power would, I'm not bitter, just acknowledging)

Re: The softwood lumber dispute

I also frown upon anti-U.S sentiment, but claming they are our economic saviours (of sorts) makes me want to vomit. The WTO? The IMF? All in Washington?? haha I'd like to see some tree huggers come out of the closet for this debate. (this is all in good fun btw)

I agree that arguement always pisses me off. Sure the americans have helped the canadian economy, but only because it helped them. Their businesses didnt come here for good will and kindness. They came here because there was money to be made. Americans dont buy canadian products because they feel sorry for us. They buy them because we offer them the best value. Grow up people and learn your economics.
trancehed99
yes I couldnt agree more

they believe so profoundly that they are the reason that Canada has the economy that we do. why because we are their neighbour? Could they please explain Mexico then? they are also neighbours.

Canadians just don't allow the americans to take advantage of us as much. it comes down to capability, and canada has the infrastructure to allow us to be dependant from the US if it ever had to go that way.

this world is a small place, and im sure we could find another another trading partner no problem.

You people are so miss guided I have to laugh.

America buys 80 percent of Canadian exports....gee..if America didn't buy them, who would? ..Think about it. No one..that's who.

There is no sense in debating someone who thinks there right, and won't listen to wisdom, because to educate someone in Geo Political and economic inflation and how the world economy works will take years. Having an opinion on it without education, is just being foolish.

Just keep believing what you want, your not hurting anyone but yourself by having the wrong opinion on something.

And to debate it on this forum is the equivelant of George W. Bush giving proper English lessons, it's just not going to get us anywhere.

not that I want to get involved too much but Halo is better at this than me. Why does Canada keep comparing itself to the US dolla and not the Euro or British pound that are more powerfull than the US dollar? Why does Canada keep going with Whatever Uncle sam is doing? Just a question Sven not bashing :D

Seriously, just as I see American "Canada bashing" as nothing but pure insecurity, this "USA defensiveness" only serves to show off the insecurities of so many Canadians about their country.

The fact is that many, many things about our country (like, for example, our Prime Minister) are a complete joke and might as well be the laughing stock of the rest of the world. But I'm sure every non-American is familiar with the USA's "issues" as well.

Is there some particular reason we need to compare our country to the USA? There ARE other countries out there, and frankly, if citizenship wasn't such a damn pain in the ass to get, I'd much rather go down to live in a European country than either Canada or the USA.

But I digress. The more we argue about Canada being dependent on the US, or Canada being a better place to live, or Americans being stupid, or whatever, the more we put that country right up there in the spotlight where it doesn't belong.

R.J. is an idiot point.

everyone forgets that the USA also exports to Canada, about a third of their exports 165Billion USD. If there was no Canada, lots of people in the States would starve too.

Trade goes both ways.

That is just total Bull....and here is the proof:

http://www.statcan.ca/english/Pgdb/gblec02a.htm

Notice the Export to America 255,028.2 ....That's about 15 percent (if not less of total american trade). Meaning, they are not dependent on canada, as much as we are on them.

ALSO! if you look at the bottom, where it says balance, AMERICA IS THE ONLY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WE GET MONEY FROM! That's over 95 billion dollars, all the other countries we buy more from them then they do from us (notice the negative sign). So you better start liking america if you want to live in Canada.

Care to make any other false statments ahlamalek?

If you care to learn more about The world economy, rather then arguing with people and not learning anything, then I suggest you look at this site, and maybe you will learn the difference SITC trade, and HS 1996 and so on.

http://unstats.un.org/unsd/trade/default.htm

Now try to spread some fact around, instead of hatred towards the US.

Again like I said in the previous post, If your not educated on the topic, then your just a fool with an opinion, and everyone has those.
It's not a shot at you ahlamalek or the others in this thread, you maybe all smart guys, but I just wanted to show you that your a little miss guided on your opinions..that's all.
infinity HiGH
89.1%, to be exact, of our trade is with the US. Thats as of 2000. In 1996 it was 83.7%. I'm assuming that it's even higher now.

I dunno about you, but to me it seems like the States have a huge influence on our economy.

ahlamalek
take a breathe there... where did i write I hate the US!

ok first thing first, I was wrong about my "third of exports", i was off by 15%. Still Canada is their first market for exports, you can't deny that. If you remove that, lots and lots of people would loose their jobs at their side of the border. Also Canada and the US are so close that it would be sensless not to trade with each other. Both countries need the eachother.

ok the thing about us "getting" money from the US (what a lame statement), it sounds like we're getting aid as a 3rd world country.
you have to see the big picture here: China which has bigger surplus with the US than Canada (155B CDN vs. 95B), take this number and compare it to China's and Canada's GDP you get 9% and 7.3% respectivly. Now I dare you to say that China would starve if the US stopped trading since China is "getting" more money than Canada!! (Also Japan has a bigger surplus with the US than Canada).

My first post wasn't about bashing the US or defending Canada, its only to spread some truth around that issue (i half missed my goal tho :/)
