i download mp3's. i also buy vinyl.
so whats your point again?

Bonzai/Lightning went out of business. They even said that mp3's hurt their sales. This will not be the last major label to fold due to mp3's.

Mr. Maytag, I think you need to think before you speak...I leave in Wisconsin and I'm Dj. Therefore there are not many record shops around (I do a lot of my shopping online) but I still like to go to record shops around the area. One record shop that I do go to is one that I believe you work at. Many of the tunes I buy from your shop I either have downloaded the MP3 or heard on a liveset! So I believe that, IMO, that MP3 downloads help sales (remember that this is MY OWN OPINION). For example, I bought Infusion - Legacy from your shop a week ago because I heard the MP3 first. So you can thank a MP3 download for your paycheck. And if you keep this additude up that MP3 downloads (the ones you disagree with, not livesets) are evil, I will stop shopping at the establishment you work at!!!!

no....the question is how much.

if mp3's had not come along..i doubt I would have bought as many cd's as I have because you hear a song on it and go...the rest must be as good.

You must be wrong if DJMaytag says so!!!1111

no they went out of business. i saw the thread. my point is that you are attacking mp3's as if its the ONLY cause to the closing of my favorite label. however, you are wrong. i collect mp3's and i support the tunes that deserve my money. not all mp3 collector's are "theives".

So basically what you're saying is that if people download the mp3 to check out the track and then buy the vinyl it's hurting the record label?

Go, you!

I just thought of a decent theory on mp3s.Mp3 is in short, involuntary promotion. The mp3 promotes the artist and the music the artist creates, and this free sample of the artist's work, can make more people go out and buy the artist's record, just like a commercial or airplay. This form of promotion has a price, like all other forms of promotion has,in this case it being a loss in income. This can however be compensated by the amount of people it can reach that actually buy records, see the artist live etc.

Just a thought I had:)

and by the way:

It's useless to believe that mp3s were what caused Lightning to shut down.Jurgen Leyers himself said that it was only PARTLY the reason for its demise.Considering the amount of records Lightning sold ALONE on having L-Vee and MIKE on their roster makes the theory that mp3s alone caused Lightning to shut down useless, not to mention the fact that NONE of the other reasons for Lightning to shut down was mentioned with a single word anywhere.

I do alot of liveset listening too, so I know what records to stock for the store. I don't believe that streams from ASOT on ID&T or other shows are necessarily bad.

But I do believe there are a significant number of ppl out there that have no intention of ever buying anything that DO download rips of individual songs that DO have an impact on sales.

While it's great that you're buying records, and even greater that you've bought some from my shop, I can't sit by idly and watch my favorite labels fold like Bonzai just did. I'm sorry if my opinion turns you off, but I stand by my opinion that labels are being hurt by those who have no intention of ever purchasing the tunes they steal.

I'd love to revisit this in say 5 years and would LOVE to be proven wrong, but if more labels start dropping, then maybe it'd be time for some to take a look at what they're doing and think twice about it.

Without the Internet, I wouldn't know about trance. I would still call it techno and bop my head to Darude and DJ Sammy.

I would never have bought any GUs, Airdrawndagger, ISOS series, Magik Series, Northern Exposures, Communicate, TPOD, Global DVD/CD, Tranceport 1-3, etc ...

Dood, you're a bigger trance junkie than I am! :D So, I doubt that you NEVER would have found out about trance if you never used the internet, it just would have taken a bit longer than it did (I went though a similar process over the years, starting out listening to LA Style, 2 Unlimited, and other Rave Til Dawn sorta stuff!)

Haha, I remember listening to that back in like 94. It's great, I completely forgot I had it. I think I'll go give it a listen again.
