I need some friggin advice about school. How in the hell do u college people do it??? I make 30k a year AND I go to school at night. I’m covered by student loans, but there is a 15k balance that I didn’t get covered for, so now I have payments to my school of $330 a month starting oct. 1! How F’D is that??? I don’t know what the hell to do. All I have is a car payment, insurance, cell phone and that’s it. I’m crashing at my mom’s right now, but I REALLY want to move out and I don’t think I can afford it. It is SO damn expensive down here. What are some other ways I can get money for school?
I’m starting to not like the whole day job thing either…I’m not going to have ANY time to do anything once my classes start next month. Maybe I should start bar tending or something so I can have more time off during the week to take classes during the day? But I don't like not knowing how much money I'm going to make either. I just feel very restless and I feel like I need to change my entire lifestyle right now. I always go through this every year. I don’t have any stability and I don’t LIKE stability. Is there something wrong with me that I find it extremely depressing to be at the same job for 20+ years and live in the same house your whole life? Bleh!
What should I do? Should I just stick it out for one quarter (11 weeks) and start thinking about doing something majorly different after the holidays? I’m all set right now at my mom’s…she’s totally supporting me and we’re actually getting along great, so I don’t mind crashing there, but I want my own place bad! I want to go to school during the day but I need to make a lot of money so I can pay my bills and be able to do stuff. Has anyone done that thing where u work for the school and get hooked up with tuition or something like that? |

maybe i can chime in,
don't fret, most college kids who are independant go through this panic period of time. especially those working to pay for tuition and various other expenses outside of making rent. from my own experience (living in nyc - manhattan) I did the school during the day work at night thing. I went a less conventional route, I did data entry at night which paid decent to fund my books and part of my tuition and rent in manhattan. My loans were deferred till I graduated (which I'm paying off now). Luckily I found non-stressful decent paying work which I could afford to work 4-5 days a week a night for 5-6 hours. My routine consisted of school from 8-3 and work from 4-9 and I still had my weekends. Occassionally I worked the weekends to make extra cash.
I think alot of us fall into the I need to work and take less classes just because I can only make this much which will only allow me to take xxx credits. It's a hard decision and honestly when it came down to it for me, I ended up dropping about 8k on my american express just so I can take my classes, make payments on amex and rent versus not taking any classes and working more to make rent and whatever little cost incurred by tuition.
It's a great deal to live with your parents during college. It saves a bunch and hell I can say I did it for a few semesters (the catch up semesters) but I thought long and hard about it and decided in my junior year that I needed to get out as quick as possible. I ended up taking 3 semesters of 21 credits to finish a semester early which would give me a head start on the graduating class in terms of job market. And to my advantage, I landed a FT Job with a Fortune 500 company in June (applied in Jan graduated in Dec but walked in May) - So my application made it in way ahead of the May graduates. I think you need to choose it wisely, reduce your expenses, consolidate your time to practice an efficient work/school routine that is compromised on both ends to make yourself satisfied with it. Alot of talking I know, its much harder to do! Keep at it, you'll be just fine. |

:stongue: title.
Well. I'm currently enrolled in 21 hours which is the max here. I'm only doing that because this is the last semester that my scholarship covers, so I'm wanting to pack in as much as I can. Now I'm wondering if I made the right choice just to merely not pay any money out of pocket. I KNOW. I hate feeling boggled down. I hate routine. Wake up, go to school, come home, work. Wake up, school, , eat, wash hands, study. It's sickening! monotonous and I start to loose all my .. how do you say..luster? Anyways, what do you do? I serve on the weekends. I always thought that was the ideal college kid job. Think about it. Come in at 5pm, get out at 11 with anywhere from $100 - $300 dollars. Yeah, so basically upon entrance into the restaurant you might as well bend over and get ed at the door and get it over with. You are a slave meeting demands, restaurant politics, blah blah. I'm sure you know. But the guests' pockets are open for you. Do a little dance, jig for them and their yours! I only work on weekends though. I look at it like this: this is what I must go through NOW to ensure my life isnt like this in the future. I'm at school Mon and Wed. from 12 - 9. Tues and Thurs from 8 -11. I've felt the exact same way about getting my own place and friends pressuring me but dajl;j! I think it would be impossible to do that. Work for school and a home?! No no no... I'll be here, saving for trips and school. I'm not ready to break my backbone just yet. I say stay at home. It's only our American perspective. In other cultures its not uncommon at all to be 30 and still living with your parents. Plus, I think as girls we have an advantage. If a guy was to say he was living at home, I think its more frowned upon than a girl. but ohh the freeeedom. |

THREE semesters of 21 credits ?!?
W.O.W. How did it work out for you?!
Now that doesn't make me feel so bad. It IS possible !
I always feel like I just need to bring a sleeping bag and pillow because I'm ALWAYS there. It's gonna be hard for me if I've only been in for a month and already feel this way. :stongue: Oh well. It will be over in 2 months. I can tough it out. And when I look back on it, I'm sure there will be other semesters that make this one feel like a breeze. |

yea but u'd think 30k a year would be enough for me to live, but how come it's not?? i think i just want to do the struggling college student from now on. it was harder for me to do that before when i was with my ex because he hangs out with rich people and i was always going to functions and crap like that with him and i felt like i needed to keep up. |

ok i told myself i wouldnt respond to this thread..
but ill toss a few pennies in..
from what ive seen of the posts you've posted is that you've given off a stigma of trying to be old and professional...
the living at home with mom is a step in the right direction of acting young again.... but you gotta drop the professionals and hang out with younger folks again... there is always a time that we'll grow up... why do it before it'll happen..... |

i think my problem is similar. all of my friends are out of college so they don't have the same probs i do moneywise and timewise anymore. not only that, but i want to start life now. i want to date girls...i want to look the way i want...i want to have money....i see other people and they seem to be able to do that and it makes me want to do those things even more. maybe i'm just being unrealistic. i just want my life when i'm through with college to be what i want it to be and it's definitely a struggle to make it that... |

With that sum Sly I don't feel you would be "struggling," especially if you stayed home. I'm not struggling financially, only mentally hah. Thank gawd for my weekends to unwind.
Keep up with the Jones'? How old are you again? |
