Question Creativity restricted????

hi all,

this might sound like a very stupid post (coz it is kinda stupid). I read somewhere in this forum that people generally start off finding a good tune and then build their drums / bass from there, go back start on an intro and so on....

my question is if i start off with the bass / drums & then try to add a good lead (which is what i normally do), am i restricting my lead to what sounds good with the basic track i have in place??? let's say i don't get easily convinced about the lead and try hard to get a tune that sounds best with what i already have in place (the percussion) am i still restricting myself...

to cut a long story short, should "more" prominence be given to the lead (ie., start off with the lead) or is it that it really doesn't matter???

also please don't post the obvious answer that all sounds are equally important...that's why i've put "more" in quotes......plur

There are no rules to music. To be as creative as possible just go with the flow, and do it in the way you are comfortable with.

I wouldn't worry about it. Do whichever comes easier to you.
I usually start from the beggining although I know what I want to achieve roughly, it's still easier for me to get there if I know how the song is shaping up before hand.
It's individual so whichever works best for you. As Fundamental said "There are no rules".

Cheers

For me, it depends.. sometimes when I just created some nice synth I experiment with it and find a nice melody, and then I put the bassline in later. Other times I start with the bassline chords and fit in a synth melody later which has already been created in my head meanwhile or comes up while "filling up" the track. Percussion comes just after creating some bassline most of the times, but sometimes I start with percussion. Dunno why.

So no "rules" for me, it just comes how it comes

Cheers!
