Cor, these kinda threads always get quite heated I'll tell ya.
I'm personally a non-religious person, and I sometimes do find some of the things that very religious ppl say amusing, but the same goes for stupid ppl who arent religious. A stupid person is a stupid person, regardless of what they believe in (that's what seperates the sane from the insane ;))
I'm a hard facts kinda person, so I find it a bit difficult to believe in the stuff that the Bible has within its covers, but then, to me, it's not much more than a very old fairy tale that has becomes the grounds for a belief system for an incredibly large amount of people. Just because many people believe in something, that doesnt make it true. (cue world-is-flat reference)
But that's just to me, and my view isn't necessarily the correct one, hell, who's to say there even is a correct view?
I jsut sometimes get annoyed but over-preachy religious types, one's that tell me, simply because I don't believe in God, regardless of my moral standing as a human being, I will rot in Hell when I die.
These same people then go have sex before marriage, or fall pregnant, or steal, yet never once get off their high horse as THEY believe, and that somehow makes them think they can get away with it. ("25 Hail Mary's should make up for that drunken binge"-esque thinking)
I fully respect other people's religious beliefs, and ask only that they respect my lack of one. I would never swear in a church, not because I fear that I shall spend eternity with firey pokers up my arse, but because respect beget respect.
But when I heard someone who considers themselves very religious, and abides by the rules better than most, say that people with other beliefs (say Hinduism) would go to Hell, I lost all and total respect for him.

Well there's a bunch of things I can say here.
1) Evidence does not exist "out there"! Just data that is filtered through this subjective lense we call the brain.
2) The fact that intelligent and educated men do believe in the existence of God would argue against that statement your 'friend' made. Yes, oh Yes they could be wrong, but that's true of many things we believe and once believed! The point is *it's debateable* and not some sort of clear cut "fact" in the manner of say, the existence of the sun!
3) Empirical evidence is merely one facet of our box of knowledge and to deny anything outside of this (philosophy for example) is just silly in my view. More importantly evidence is theory laden. You do not "evidence" existing in any "objective" sense. So if one posits the theory that God exists there are certain reasonable things one can 'predict' or 'infer' and certain apecsts of our being (ie our moral sense, the existence of objective morals) which they think are best explanied by the existence of God.
So whatever the case it's not so cut and dry as your ignorant friend suggests. |

Our moral sense can be easily described by scientific means. A simple fact is that humans are tribal animals, and if any member of that tribe acted against the tribal interests, that person was cast out or killed which ensured antisocial elements would not procreate. If we were animals without moral standards, we'd be extinct by now, as we are not well suited for lone survival.
Your point about objective morals is also pretty shaky, as there are societies with so vastly different moral views that are almost opposite to each other. For example, take the american pre columbian civilizations. Sacrifices and killings were normal parts of the culture, opposed to cristian and especially buddhist views where all life is sacred. The roman/greek god Dionis/Bacchus was encouraging orgy type sex, while the catholic church limits it only to married couples. The fact is that religious books were written by superstitious schisophrenics who in turn fascinated gullable and naive masses and made them believe they were in contact with supernatural beings. The fact that the masses are unbelievably naive is proved by the pre-christian european myths. Stories of bearded men throwing lightnings at unobedient people are what happens when people believe in ideas without any evidence to back them up. I agree that those stories are nice fiction, but at the time people believed it to be the actual truth. Besides, there are so many religions around, not to mention all the wacky cults, and all their members keep saying their religion is the right one and their cult/church founders are capable of performing miracles. Hell, the christianity itself arised from the cult using very blunt and simple demagoguery which appealed to the poverty and injustice stricken masses. If the roman empire had been socially fair and just, you'd be praying to Jupiter now.
By these statements, I am not saying that god doesn't exist, what I am saying is that the religions are often childish and limited in their beliefs. I am also saying that the existance of a god is just an unprovable theory, and regardless of the fact whether such an entity exists or not, it is naive to be 100% sure or unsure whether it exists or not. |

Hmm...so you think that the person who pulled out all of this information (which I acquired in my history class as well) is the most intelligent one here. I don't really care, but why is that? Is it because what Drug_Tito has to say pretty much complies to your jackass statement that you quoted to start this damn thread off? I think so.

i also consider Michael Russo very intelligent, although he is on a completely different spectrum than I.

the sad thing is, ignorance is bliss, but the ignorant are not always serene, because sometimes the ignorance is chipped away with discovery, and this leads to the fustration of new complications.
and by the way, i never stated my oppinion, philosophically or religiously, so you cannot determine any degree of ignorance that i possess.
