Hm.. are you serious? Descartes was a really great contest until they made it easy, when it became a requirement to get into UW... And now it's gone.. hehe..

LOL... I wouldn't really say that it's gone, just part of the Euclid I guess.

Oh yeah, Waterloo also has programming contests. I think that's it though.

Bizz, I didn't write the DaVinci contest, but I saw the test booklet today. Umm... some of the stuff seemed impossible. There's a couple of easy questions here and there (especially with chem), but overall I think I'd get a couple right out of twenty.

Yeah, U of W hosts the CCC (Canadian Computing Competition) .. I was only in school for the first year it was out, and it was pretty good (made it to the finals, but declined to go, lol) .. U of W has other contests .. there's a Chem one too (forgot what it's called)

The DaVinci is supposed to be pretty impossible .. now that I think about the one I wrote, they put second-year calculus questions on there which I don't think anyone could possibly solve using OAC calc material .. if you can get about 10 out of 20 right I think you've pretty much placed in the top 10%

I went to Waterloo today... I liked it, except for the fact that it was pouring all day, I was outside all day, my clothes were completely soaked through, and I'm probably going to get sick. There weren't many people there, but I like how it seems like an actual city within the university. The computer research building (the round glass one) is cool, and the lecture halls they have in there are really comfortable, except for the fact that the desks are the size of a hockey puck.

I'm going to be buying a laptop soon... Durafei, if I buy a powerbook (once those g5's come out), will I be ok for my programming classes and everything else within the university? Most code should be cross-platform, right (especially java)? What language(s) will I be using? Any other considerations? Or should I just get a pc...

I don't know if they still do the chem one... my teacher handed out a contest from a while ago and we did it together as review for the final exam. I'm pretty sure that he would have promoted the contest or something if Waterloo still did it. But maybe not...

Some questions were just plain impossible, some were free marks, but some of the questions were simplistic, yet interesting. For example, they had a question that basically consisted of a diagram. A boat is floating in this pool (or some closed container of water) with a rectangular object placed inside. The question asked what would happen to the water level in the object were pushed off the boat and into the water. I don't think there was any other information... what would the answer be?

Doesn't really matter what you use as long as it has a telnet client.

Thats a very famous question.. If the object was thrown out of the boat and out of the water, boat would rise, and water level would lower. Now if you throw object back into the water, water level would increase. So my educated guess is that in the original question, water level would remain. Feel free to correct me though..

hey guys
i haven't posted in a while because i was at queen's
yeah i took engineering
sci'06

i had a blast this year
kingston has lots of clubs but none that are trance/techno orientated apart from one (MX).

kingston has lots of good looking girls...

engineering in 1st year is awesome, you WILL have so much fun during frosh week... Trust me on this...

I didn't even apply to UT, just because I didn't like it (my opinon) i had to choose between comp in waterloo and normal eng at queen's and i chose queens.

i believe that the eng frosh week at queen's is much better than any other faculties frosh week at any university in ontario.. really.

and courses are hard... esp. physics... it blows... but if you come to queen's all you need is a 55% to pass first year, mind you, you still have to pass all your core courses.. two semesters of calculus, physics, chemistry and one semseter of algebra.

PM me or add me on msn ([email protected]) if you want to chat more.
