the damage is progressive, and you may not recognize it initially...you may be taking years off your ears though and not be recognizing it. A lot of rockstars and whatnot from the 70's can barely hear now because of what they did to their ears then. |

lol, I wear headphones ALL the time, for like 2 years listening to music and they have super bass...
i cant imagine how much damage i'm doing. i already watch the TV two times louder then the rest of the family :D |

i think its now established it does do damage over time, jus remember this though;

Apparently, every 10 dB that sound is increased by, the energy in the sound doubles. The pain threshold is supposedly 150 decibells, and after that any exposure could cause permenant damage.

I thought my ears were fine. I thought ringing got a few hours was normal. One night I asked someone I was with who goes clubbing less, to let me know when their ears stopped ringing. They had already stopped. Mine rang for another 8 hours!!!
Since that night I've worn ear plugs every night. I really enjoy it. Still hear everything, but not too loud or anything. The plugs I've got are the 85c AU plugs (yellow). I've tried all the others I can get (in the sillicon $10) and the 85c work the best IMHO.
Earplugs may not look cool, but who gives a when they save your ears for life!

This is a topic of great concern for me, because I'm constantly surrounded by loud music, either dj'ing or being in a club... (booth/monitor speakers are deadly!)

Yep. There are small sound sensitive hairs in your inner-ear called "cilia." They are different sizes to detect different frequencies of sound. The ones that detect higher frequencies (treble) are smaller and more fragile. These are the ones that are more suseptible to damage from loud noise. When you have suffered great hearing loss, you usually can only hear the lower frequencies of sound. Everything sounds muffled because your ears can't detect higher frequencis (Hz) anymore. :(
I'm also concerned about this. Nobody has answered my question about club DJs using earplugs. Is that simply not an option because it would affect your DJing performance?:conf: |

Aren't headphones powered by electro magnets? If so isn't there is a small amount of radiation being emmited to cause the speakers to make sound?
My physics teacher once told us about it, but more details would be good :) (or I'll try find my book)

I do believe that music like heavy metal (Lots of high and mid range noise) are more damaging to your ears than heavy bass stuff like trance or house. Don't quote me on that though. Anyways, i have had tinitus for a couple of years now and today i can live with it. It was hell in the begining before you got used to it though. Today i don't even know that i have it most of the times even though i should be more careful when i know what high volumes under long time can do to you. I can actually say one thing though. At the level my tinitus is at now, it was worth every second of what i went through when i first got it. That tells volumes about how much music means to me. A good trance tune just isn't the same at lower volumes. I don't know how i could ever live without music around me. It's what brings me life when i'm down and brings me even more joy when i'm already happy. Music is right up there next to women on my can't live without list.
You obviously have to have some sense though. Having your headphones blaring at max volume all days long WILL bring consequenses that are NOT (God knows) easy to handle. Some people can live with tinitus better than others, i'm glad that i can handle it. I still listen to music at high volumes at times but not for as long and as loud as i used to. There are times when i just shut everything off and just experience silence for a few days. It's a awesome feeling when you have stressed your ears several days in a row with music every hour of the day. Just to keep the tinitus at it's present level.

| yesterday i went to Kisstory at a local club of mine, where they were playing classic tunes, but the ing idiots had the treble turned up to the max. It was unbearable. After about 30 mins on the floor i had to stick to the sidelines. :whip: |
