We've all heard and seen enough anti-US, America-bashing rhetoric on these forums.
Now let's turn our attention to France.
If you want to see how stupid, pathetic, and ridiculous this country (or at least its government) is, read this:

| Sorry Eugene, but you're a little behind the times (so is CNN). The French have been using "courriel" and "mel" ever since e-mail became a regular everyday thing. The only new thing here is that it has become the standard phrase, that's all. |

At office, and in my personnal life, my coworkers and I use "courriel" all the time. In the media and everywhere else, its courriel.
Courriel is short for Courrier Electronique i.e. Electronic Mail.
You guys can't just judge another language from an 'english' perspective, be it the French language or any other.
Basically the french govt (like any other goddamn govt) wants one word to designate one thing not 2 or 3 or 20 words. This makes law writing, and official documents easier to write and more standardized.
