I see references to different genres; trance, break beat, progressive, psy-trance, etc.. Can someone explain what the characteristics of these genres are?
Yes, I'm new to this, and my main interest is in trance. |

Sure........
Anyway, I myself can't really describe some genres, but I can give recommendations of DJs/Producers for some:
Trance:
Armin van Buuren

Progressive:

Well, I'm not gonna speak about all sub-genres because the post would be huge, so I'll just be brief and skip the recommendations because I'm in a hurry and I wouldn't have time to look for all the names anyway :)
House: Disco's prodigal son, it's the simplest genre (hence being the most popular one). Influences other than disco are soul, jazz and blues. If you hear something with that almighty 4/4 beat and jazzy influences, it's probably Deep House; funky sound, funky house; soulful sound, classic garage (mind the "classic"); if all above + loads of filters, "French house". If we extend the meaning of house to anything post-disco, we could also include synthpop, eurodance and pop music as sub-genres (yes, mate, people do play electronic music for Britney Spears to sing). There's also something called Progressive House, which is house blended with trance and it's quite trendy nowaday. Whenever you don't know whether it's house or trance call it prog - if a prog-head doesn't come arguing with torches and knives you're probably right.
Techno: House's prodigal son. Think about the word "Detroit" - what is the first thing that comes to your mind? So, this is the music that is more likely to have come from all those fabrics and ghettos and economical recession. Very repetitive and mechanical, listen to anything from Adam Beyer and it'll make you understand what techno is (or should be). Even tta secretly knows that, after the Swedes got ahold of the genre, it turned out to be more fun :p
Trance: German techno's prodigal son. Loads of synths in a repetitive flow of sounds that had a very emotional and hypnotical result. That's what trance used to be (acid trance, for example). Then there was this progressive trance thing that started to borrow housey elements and that, after borrowing too many things from eurodance and pop stuff, gave birth to anthem trance. Despite of its origin, it's not all that bad because it can still be emotional and hypnotical when used properly (You'll easily see elitists using the word "cheesy" whenever something goes wrong).
Psy-trance: mushroom's prodigal sound. The music is quite good if you want to hear it at home (not recommended at rave because of e-tards, hippies and stoned dj's who think they can play the same thing all night long without bothering people). Loads of complicated synths, futuristic fxs and even some mid-eastern influence because of its Indian origin (hippies in goa used to get high while listening to this stuff).
Breakbeat: James Brown's prodigal son. Roughly you can say that whenever electronic music comes without the 4/4 beat, it's breakbeat. You know what hip hop is, don't you? Well, that's some sort of breakbeat. Fatboy Slim, Prodigy and Chemical Brothers usually produce it too. If you speed it up, you get drum'n'bass.
Hardcore: Techno's bastard son. Distorted bassdrums, sped up tunes,... this is fun for anger management. There's also happy hardcore, which is one of the best things that ever came from a human mind - get your epic trance records and play them 20% faster and add the fun factor. There you go ;)
Ambient/Downtempo: Electronic music not to be danced becuase it's supposed to relax you or something.
Industrial: Rock's prodigal son. Fun, dark... this is what rockers understood when they first heard hardcore techno, I guess.
Garage: the music from the US used to be somewhat related to house. The current music from the UK though sounds more like some sort of "Progressive RnB" :p Speed Garage is also cool: you get the best basslines from drum'n'bass and that catchy housy beat and ta-da :)
As you can see, it's quite difficult to give a proper explanation about all genres in such short time, but with this briefing now you have an idea of "what is what".

if you want to hear what each genre sounds like just go to some online record stores and listen to the songs and there will be a description of what genres it consists of (and thats how its organized)
