the next evolutions in the human body

we've come out from the monkeys to the idiots we are nowadays, now what do you think we'll turn into? in the near future. what are the next evolutions our body'll have?

i personally see no utility what so ever in having beard, moustache and even pubic hair. also those 'things' at the top of your fingers/toes (i have no idea how do you call that in english, in portuguese it's 'unhas'), why in hell do they have to keep growing forever? having to cut them is a waste of time

i remember also reading/hearing somewhere scientists discovered that the next evolution is probably going to be the smallest toe in your foot to disappear, so we'll have in the future humans with 4 toes instead of 5.

and yes i know this thread is pretty useless, and even scary in a sci-fiction genetic horror point of view, it's just to take a break from the ninja-ness. though ninjas still own :D

it's called finger-/toe nails

i hope we keep our hair btw :)

Finger and toenails are there for a reason. Without them:

1) Our fingers and toes would be ugly as hell
2) They would become smushed after the years, as they are body extremeties which are constantly put in stressful situations.
3) Also, don't forget gripping, etc. in certain situations.

given the technoligical nature of our society, there probably won't be any major changes to our bodies for many centuries. Future evolutions won't be based on better functionality as a being, but there will be evolutions regarding our appearance. We are slowly evolving into a prettier and more attractive race, because it's a pretty ones who get laid all the time :)

If you understand how evolution works, you probably won't think that will be possible.

Someone would have to have a gene that makes them not have fingernails/toenails, through mutation or maybe there is already a gene like that out there, who knows... but in order for the whole population of the earth to eventually inherit that trait, people without fingernails/toenails must have a better chance of reproducing healthy offspring than people with fingernails/toenails... which I don't see happening unless there was a virus that killed anyone who had fingernails/toenails...

Same thing with the 4 toe thing. I dont see how having four toes would make you more favourable in evolution. Who wants to make babies with a freak? :p

Disagree overall. The attractive ones have always gotten laid -- not only has it always happened in humanity's past, but it happens all the time all over the broad spectrum of the animal kingdom. The prettiest (by the definitions of the particular species in question) and most fit males get selected by the females.

Regarding the technological nature of society, I am afraid it is exactly that which will drastically influence all of our subsequent evolution. Due to our society and technological advances, many things in our basic way of life is changed.

I am no expert by a long, long shot, but off the top of my head, some things that will change in us as a species are most likely to be:

- larger/more complex brains (due to the generally greater complexity they are handling today -- just think about Mathematics and computer programming)

- less and less muscle mass as it is not used much (most human adults never fully develop their muscles as nature intended them to be through normal usage -- by "normal" I mean climbing trees, lifting heavy things, carrying food for miles, and runnning for miles hunting animals)

- greater loss of body hair, although I do not know if *total* loss is to be expected -- though due to the fact that we are always clothed, and that many people shave all their body hair on principle (finding it "disgusting") indicates that perhaps we will lose all body hair.

- perhaps changes in body physiological structure, i.e. longer/shorter legs, or longer/shorter arms, for whatever reason.

Etc.

Hmm, reading that over, I guess the picture that is being painted is that of a oversized-head, hairless, stimpy-limbed stereotypical Martian!

Lol, wouldn't be surprised if we looked like that in a couple hundred thousand years.... :haha:

I don't think 'prettiness' is so much a genetic or evolutionary thing. I mean obviously it comes from genes, but just because a gorgeos girl and hot guy make babies, doesn't mean those babies will look good too. If you put pizza and beer into a blender you'll probably end up with crap, no matter how good they taste on their own.

As for the hair, being hairless isn't a distinct evolutionary advantage because we can shave (and not every culture finds it disgusting either).

I don't foresee larger or more complex brains, either. In reality, the smarter folks often make up for their intelligence with a lack of social skills. The smartest of humans are getting smarter, but overall I'd say the human race is probably getting dumber because calculators, computers, television, all that stuff prevents people from actually having to use their brains.

Personally, I think the human race is destined to die out before it evolves, unless global society undergoes some serious changes.

I am talking about simple things like hair or eye colour that contribute to what a majority consider to be attractive. These ARE (in most cases) genetically transferred to the child

I think if that were true, it would have already happened... human hair and eye colour really haven't changed much in the past few millenia. Most people, for example, find blue eyes most attractive, but brown eyes are much more common.

Keep in mind that in today's world, getting laid does not equate to reproducing. Another good reason why this race may be cut off from evolving at all - sex is based on all the normal biological rules but children are mostly limited to the ones that marry, which a lot of times is for completely un-biological reasons...
