But, what's the true concept of "foreigner"?
Someone with a different accent? People from other cities can have different accents as well. Specially in the old land (Europe, Asia, Africa) where languages have developed deeply and every region has its very own particular way to speak. You're Canadian, aren't you? Would you consider someone from Vancouver as foreigners? They've got a distinct accent (the same for the Quebecqois people).
Someone from a different ethnic group? It all depends on what you define by ethnic group. In the new land (America, Australia) miscigenation (sp?) has reached levels in which you can hardly define who's white, who's asian and who's black all the time (specially in South America). There's nothing like pure blood: everybody's got roots from many different "ethnic groups". Besides, you can have people from different ethnic groups with the same accent being born in the same city. How can you call foreigner someone who's got the same educational and cultural background?
Someone from a different culture? Culture comes from many aspects, such as religion, manners and other personal concepts. Once again, a person from a different country may share a similar cultural background, whereas someone from a different region of your country may have a completely different culture.
Someone from another country? If you're Canadian, would consider somone who's got a Canadian father and a Canadian mother, raised into German culture, but that lived all his life in Sudan as a foreigner? Would you consider someone who's born in Canada but that has got a Chinese mother and a Nepalese Father as a foreigner? Keep in mind that, unless this person doesn't ever leave home, he'll know what the Canadian lifestyle is.
Some people will say that foreigner is someone who comes from a different country, whose parents come from the same country (or from any other country but yours) and shares a completely different point of view on life. However, today's urban culture is not much different all around the world, as we can see here in these forums: in this thread, we've got people from Norway, Canada, Holland, Australia... and culture shock is minimum.
Someone who speaks another language? Sometimes people who share the native language can't understand each other. Sometimes people who have different mother tongues can understand each other just by body language. Finally, we can all learn different languages.
What's my point? We're all foreigners in some way, since we all behave differently, think differently and even talk differently. Why? Because we all live in our own world, which is just a tiny part of the whole. What changes is just the level of this difference between each one's world. Thus, there's nothing wrong with liking foreign boys, because one of the most important things in life is to try to broad our mind as much as possible, and one of the best ways to do it is getting in touch with different point os views: no matter if it comes from someone who grew up 10 thousand miles away from you or just accross the street :)
By the way, Veenaschneetzel, I'm a fawnah! :D |
