PLEASE NOTE:
The title to this thread is stuck. It should read "Recommendation Tournament (Experiment) ROUND 1 & 2 UNDERWAY, WE NEED RESERVES".
(The name sucks; be my guest if you can think of a sexier one.)
Recently I got into a "you gotta check this song out" duel with a complete stranger on a chat channel. We both had seen each others music list and were sure that our tastes were similar, but neither of us were able to recommend to the other a song that we'd never heard of and immediately took a liking to.
So, that's when I thought of this tourney.
Here are the rules:
1. 8 contestants
2. Each is paired with one other
3. Each lists their all time top 20 Trance songs
4. Each contestant has to nominate a song for the other to try based on what they think their apponent might like by looking at their top20 list. If the other person has heard it before they must pick another until they nominate a song their apponent hasn't heard.
5. The first to suggest a song that the other really likes wins.
Note A: You know what I mean when I say you like a song: it gives you goosebumps; it makes you tear up; it gets your foot tapping. Personally I rate my songs in a 1, 2, or 3 category: 1's I like very much; 2's I can listen to when I get sick of listening to my 1's (the sought I can't quite put in my 1's, but don't mind listening to); 3's I never want to hear such crap again. If someone recommended a song I judged a 1 they'd win.
Note B: If in one round of nominating both hit on liked songs, then both are eliminated, and the person they would have met in the next round wins automatic (or a redo - not sure)
Note C: So what's to stop someone from just saying they don't like when they really like so they can advance - I'll explain this below.
5. If you wish to drop because your apponent is not suggesting anything and it's getting tedious, just say you forfeit; don't say you like a song just to get out because I'd like to know if recommending songs to strangers is just plain a waste of time anyway, or at least a one in a million deal.
6. All the results of the rounds, plus what songs knocked which people out, will be listed in this post.
7. Obviously it's a knockout arrangement; like a tennis tournament. Round 1 there'll be 8 contestants; round 2 there will be 4; and round 3 will be the final between the last 2.
The point of this tourney is to discovering new trance. If you get knocked out you win, because you now know of another song that you love that you didn't know of before. If you don't get knocked out and win, then you haven't discovered any new trance, but you've probably got some recommending skills. It's sought of a win-win situation. The only real problem is the level of liking a song from one person to another will vary - certainly not the most scientific competition but have some fun with it.
One last thing: this may work better with people who are relatively new to trance...maybe - just a theory. Maybe not. I guess we gotta find out.

How to proceed
1. Once the start is announced (check the title) copy the template post (page 2) and enter your top 20 trance and a short description of what you like if you have any idea.
2. Check to see who your round 1 apponent is above and find their post, then, from looking at that, find them a song and put it in your round 1 post under your top20 list, as indicated in the template post.
3. Look in their post and find the song they've suggested for you and rate it THUMBS UP (they win), THUMBS DOWN, or HEARD IT BEFORE.
4. Repeat 3. if you both give each others suggestion THUMBS DOWN, or have heard them before.
5. Advance to next round once that magical song materialises :).
If you think anything seems stupid, or could be done better another way, say so.

:) - hokey and complicated. Yep, probably, but it's actually pretty simple, I just dumped all the rules up to begin with.
It's simply a comp; 8 people facing off 1v2, 3v4, 5v6, and 7v8. Tell your apponent your top20 trance songs and find them a new song they like, in like a rock/paper/sissors face-off kinda way.
That's the briefest description I can come up with.
It's gotta be better than wading through the ocean of threads in this forum that start with "check this song out!". They aren't really helpful because you have no idea what the persons tastes are, and most of the time they aren't the same as yours. If you've actually heard the song before they aren't helpful either, because you already know about the song. All they're good for is an endless stream of repeating "yeah, that's great"s, or "no, that sucks"s.
I'm starting to think the only way to find new music that you like is to simply hear it - makes sense :).
