you cant be a Disc Jockey using MP3s, if prefer to call myself an MP3J! I might have to check out this Traktor thing, i use Acoustica and iv produced some pretty good mixes with it.

But its not the same, in some ways its too smooth with computer programs, you lose the hands one approach and just doesnt feel right. WHEN i get a job i will buy some decks and become a proper DJ

I could see someone using a laptop at like a small party where its just you and your friends, but if I paid 30 bucks to see Tiesto or Corsten, I would be pissed off if they sat behind a computer the whole time and just chucked MP3 files at me.

I dont consider myself DJ, because I use my laptop when I play at parties, but you can still interact with the crowd, but they are my friends, so we are usually just ting around between songs anyways ;).

Something about the art of using a turntable and mixing music together flawlessly is something that I, myself, will probably never understand.

I understand what you are saying, why havent alot of DJ's adopted modern technology like this yet? Because if that happened, and everyone was using computers, it would take the whole skill out of mixing. My 8 year old nephew could mix with the technology thats out there these days, even people who mix using CDs get alot of from the people who stay true to vinyl.

The only thing that I can see that is modern, but doesn't take the art out of DJ'ing is that Final Scratch program that lets you hook your turntables up to a PC and mix your mp3 and wav files off it.

But now, if you were referring to DJs using computers to make mix compilations, most of them already do that, even though the ones that stay true to the art still make mix comps using their decks.

Well I'm done for now, I'm ing bored at work, someone post some boobies pics.

You won't be able to mix without a mixer. How do you adjust the EQ's? How do you move more than one knob/fader at once? How do you click and adjust everything while jumping around? I think it would not be good to try to do this live, unless you're simply waiting till the end of the songs and fading the new one in, but they could probably make a jukebox to do that. Or if you want to do weddings/yellow pages type djing then it would work. Plus you don't want to play mp3's on a club system, will sound horrible.

come on, decks... old school and old school = good.

that's the whole thing with mixing software, that ANYONE can learn it and call themselves a DJ. there's much more to djing than simply mixing 2 tracks together.

plus decks are just so much more satisfactory and vinyls ALWAYS sound different because of dust, etc. there have been numerous discussions of Vinyl vs. CD format with many valid points, you could do a search on that... but decks all the way, i think that unless you're good at handling decks, you should stay away from bpm counters and mixing programs.

its already been mentioned, but i don't understand how you can say that' You're telling me when you go to a club you never pay attention to what the DJ is doing. if he's sitting down doing nothing at a computer, it sure would be borring. With decks and mixers they can interact with the crowd, and also, its the impurities in the sound that make it more interesting and messing around with the mixer in the middle of a track. You can't do that with a computer.

As for recording mixes, most use some computer program already

I have had Traktor DJ Studio for about six months, and i have now pretty much mastered it (except i only have a single channel sound card so i can't use headphones at the same time) and i would say the mixes i produce are flawless in technical terms. They're cued correctly, the fade unnoticably between tracks, the track don't clash, the beatmatching is constantly perfect etc etc etc. The quality of the mixing is parrallel to that of a professional DJ (except maybe the choice of tracks, but thats because i can't dl music at uni).

Wow! Man you learned to beatmatch by pushing the beatmatch button in 6 months? And it's really hard to remember how tunes behave. It's very difficult to make perfect mixes with dj-software...:haha: Everybody can do it! Bull.

Shudder
yea i have traktor right now, but i dont beat match by the match bpm button. i do it by the bending or whatever its called. personally i think its easier. but seriously, i dont really like mp3 software for djing. i'd rather own the vinyl and have the music in solid format than in a computer where i could lose everything within the next hour.

turtables and vinyl, its just like a big toy, traktor im kinda sick of already

You guys are completely missing his point...

He's saying that he can mix as good as tiesto or pvd or whoever with this equipment, so it doesnt matter how much of a hard-on you have for turntables, this technology makes those guys obsolete... its old news really...

I agree though, big name superstar dj's will be a thing of the past...

that's a load of crap, a think of the past. a computer can't replace a DJ. sure it can do its job fine. But its the atmosphere the DJ creates that is good. if Tiesto starts too sit down and click a mouse, then i wouldn't go see him, may as well stay and home and let winamp run the show.

you really find watching a dj change records all that exciting?? I dont, most people dont.
For 95% of people at a party, the dj is just a direction to face, and maybe a big name to sell tickets, thats it.
