all i have to say is... WOW. 7.5+ hours of sasha! no live digweed telecast but no matter. sasha owned avalon. i have to give avalon props for this one...
it was amazing just WATCHING sasha work the decks while i was in the balcony. he does quite a lot of deck manipulation, sometimes good sometimes bad. but dammit, that was one awesome new year's eve! :D

Sasha was great. I loved he loops he did with that "ing Electricity" (or whatever it is) track. Everything else was IMO not so great.
The line was longer than the one on opening night - it went past the Periyali restaurant when I got there at 9:30 pm, and may have stretched to 5th Ave later! And this was for people with tickets! (a bouncer said that no one without tix would get in before 2 am, but when I arrived inside, there were people paying at the cashier - $100 each) Thankfully, I finally got in at 11:15 pm. They probably slowed the line before 11 pm, so that not too many free drinks would be given. I feel sorry for those who didn't make it in by midnight.
The line for coat check was utter chaos as well. I waited a little bit after coming in, but then decided to come back after midnight. So I did, and still waited at least half an hour.
I thought it would help to wait til closing, but that took 20 minutes. On both trips to the coat check, there was that angry guy who kept on yelling at people to move back. The ppl working there worked the whole time, and didn't look like happy campers. I hope they got tipped well.
Seemed like there were many non-clubbers in the crowd, some of whom were at Avalon for the first time, some of whom didn't know who the DJ's were. I experienced a good amount of rudeness.
There was also mad making out, but I'm not complaining about that. :tongue2 But I digress...
I didn't feel like I had freedom of movement throughout the club until at least 5 am. However, the floor was still full when Sasha finished at 7:30 am.
These places need to have food! Even on regular nights, especially on special nights like these. Even snacks would do, like they have at Arc. I had a big dinner beforehand, but was dying near the end. I had to rely on candy from the bathroom attendant.
And what happened to the supposed video broadcast of Digweed in LA??
I tried going to this after-party at Lotus afterwards, since it seemed cheap (and interesting, to me), but the doors were closed when I got there at around 8:15 am. I was thinking about Arc, but I thought it would be too much to pay for the amount of time I'd be there. And I've seen Sander play for 5 hours before.
I'll see if I can make it to Exit some time on New Years Day (or night thereof). But there might first be some family stuff to do. |

true too many rude rude people. too many women that think they're all that obviously don't know how to say excuse me while trying to go thru the club. i was soooo glad when people started leaving at around 3 am. it left some room up at the balcony and on the dance floor. a lot of the people dancing didn't seem to be aware of their surroundings. one of my friends got elbowed in the face pretty hard because of someone dancing by jumping up and down. but man, the music! that's all i came for... THAT was an experience. |

Sorry for going a little off-topic...
So I went to Exit for the end of Jonathan Peters' supposed 30-hour set, after doing some stuff with my brother.
I get there at 7:15 pm, pay $60 for admission (making my NYE very expensive, but I figure I'll try it this once), and $5 for coat check, expecting to get at least 6.5 good hours. JP ends up stopping at 9 pm! :whip:
He said something about having hurt his back, and will make it up at his birthday party.
I also had to wait half an hour to pick up my coat from coat check. |

after reading these reviews, it looks like those who chose Sander @ Arc made the better decision, even if the 12-hour set was a lie |

Let me first say that I dont regret at all going to see this show NYE. It was my first time seeing Sasha live and he was truly amazing. The club was beautiful whether it was packed or not didnt bother me much.
But, IMO, Sasha played nothing like I expected as far as tracks go. Maybe I am talking out of my ass, but he's been playing most of those for a few months now, at least since August. I was defintiely not expecting to recognize so many, and to tell the truth I was surprised. I guess I expected more unknowns than crowd pleasers, but then again it was new years and everything.
Also, was it just me, or was he using the same bridge between all his mixes towards the end of the night? Something that sounded a bit like Tom Mangan's Backwards Retro? If he was I guess i can't blame him. I'd be a bit weary after a few hours let alone 8.

Sasha @ Avalon was THE place to be....We showed up at around 11:30, and thankfully a friend was working the door and she ushered our entorage in --- that line was ridiculous!!
I had one of the most monumental evenings of my life! The beats he spun were, track after track, utterly amazing. I spent time going back and forth from Spider Club, which since the place was so packed on the main dance floor. Spider had a lot of room to dance (they patched Sasha into Spider as well) and a private bathroom and private bar and it was nice to relax a bit in there at moments...so so so sososossosos many awesome people were in attendance! I met some really profound people from all over the world....The crowd in Spider Room was superb...and i met some cool people downstairs too---it was great to share such a good night with them...and the hottie i met on the dance floor and danced the rest of the night with---uhhhh that was the best!
His encore with Xpander was ridiculous. He rang in the new year with wavy gravy vs. br slippy---I mean, it was nuts!!! He spun many many trax that are on his essential mix.
Yes, the place was way overcrowded at first...thank god for Spider Club as well or im not sure if the night would have been as amazing for me. Aaron and Arin (I dont know how to spell your name!) it was great to see you as well! And damn people, Aaron (stringfelowhawk) is one ing amazing dancer and I give him big props---I wish I could move like that.
It was a night consumed with debauchery, some great dancing, some making out, and a lot of indulgence --- this was definitely my favorite NYE ever. Just wish he could have spun longer....something obviously happened at the end there---either a power failure or the club was told to shut down...I imagine they were told to shut down since I saw some firemen in there ... whatever, 8 hours was enough for me. |

sasha was great fun nye. great tracks, great mixing. although i have to say, i was surprised to have recognized so many of the songs. very commercial. and yeah towards the end, he did seem to use all the same bridge. too many cranberry vodkas i guess.
i agree with wallflower. these clubs should definitely have food! i was starving by 6 and ended up incapacitated by the balcony because of it!
as for the crowd, everyone was very friendly and those who were shoving and pushing, blame the club's policy for the rudeness. they're the ones enstating a dress code and retarded door policy. but sasha's set was worth it :D |

| by the end sasha was using his cd stuff to spin instead of the vinyl. either he was tired or lazy, and thus he used a lot of loops thru his pioneer. oh yeah, someone in the booth, while looking thru his stack of vinyls, knocked over a bottle of water in the shelf that housed his vinyls. sasha didn't look too pleased as he had to remove a whole stack from the shelf and had to wipe down everything. that might've explained his going to cds at the end too :p |

The only dress code was supposedly "no sneakers", but I didn't see that be enforced, i.e. anyone being turned away because of that.
The rudeness probably had more to do with Avalon's popularity (some of which has to do with its history), and that it was cheaper than most other NYE events in the city. Arc is not promoted as heavily, and is known for usually not having alcohol - it seemed that mainly just people on the boards would know about Arc having booze on this night. Also, probably more people know about, or have heard of, Sasha than Sander. |
