I'm aware of this... I thought Galicia (or whatever the name of this place is in English, hehe) was autonomous as well. |
Not as autonomous as Catalunya or Euskadi, just say in Galicia Partido Popular (The Aznar's party) governs.
| quote: | The Basque people are not latin, so their identity as "Spanish" is even smaller because of it. And I don't know what was the policy of Franco for Catalonia (about the language and everything else), but I know he was too extreme about the Basque. ETA was created as a counter-pressure, a nationalist uprisal from a dominated land. Not that I'm defending them, but it's not something hard to understand. The region was more developed than the rest of Spain when it was "invaded" or whatever verb you prefer to use, so they felt they were supporting invaders while they didn't have much wealth for themselves anymore.
As for Catalunya, I really don't know what happened there, but it's no use to compare both places, the same way you can't compare two different individuals. |
mmmhhh Catalunya aslo had a terrorist band for find the independence, "Terra Lliure" was called.
And the Franco policy was very cruel in here. Many catalans went into exile to France. Our idiom and all of our identities were banned.
The Republicanism in here for fight against Franco was too widespreaded .
And also awe are not latins. I dunno what do you mean when you say latin but if you think about these typically spanish things when you say latin.... catalans don't like bulls " toros", we don't like sevillanas, our catalan names are not latins, we have different traditions...
And we have always been one of the richest regions of Spain, in fact now Catalunya is richest than Basque country, well is the richest region of Spain. We pay the most high taxes and all... |

Just before I leave, my definition of latin is:
Any people/nation/community which has its roots on the latin language and the ethnicity somehow linked to Rome, which includes Romania, Italy, France, Quebecoises, Spain (except Basque country), Portugal and Latin American countries (both Brazil and Spansih speaking countries). African countries that speak latin are not latin countries because they were just forced to speak the languages, and that's all. |

With Latin, I think he means that Catalunyans have a Latin (Roman) culture as in pertaining to a Romance language. Latins=Spanish, Portuguese, Galician, Catalunyan, French, Italian and there's one more right?.
Latin might have the connotation of being something Castilian but it shouldn't be like that. Of course Catalunya is very different from the rest of Spain. But all in all, Catalunya is Spanish. I had a girlfriend from Barcelona, she had spice and a great Latin body (just like hot French, Italian girls). :D |

But what you say about ethnicity is true though, Basques are not Latin, Catalans definitely are, even if they are a bit more "Euro" and less Spanish than the Andalucians or the Castilians. |
I dunno what do you mean when you say latin... but I don't feel latin, my mum is catalan and she looks like a swedish (blonde with blue eyes). And our traditions and culture are more closed to the french culture, we have a european style of life... like many ppl in here. Maybe is cause I live in Girona (60 Km to France). Also the weather in here is different, it rains a lot (850 l/m2) and it's so cold in the winter. |

As Lira and I said, French are Latin too. Latin meaning Roman-descent culture.
Even Haiti is considered to be part of Latin America because of it's French origins.... |

| Yeah, and now the Spanish govt. has changed its official stance and says its conducting an investigation to figure out who did it. According to www.elpais.es Al Qaeida claimed responsability in a letter sent to an Arab newspaper, but the veracity has yet to be confirmed. This is getting interesting.... |

| that means the letter must have been sent yesterday at the latest, if it was recived via post |
