The best vehicle on the road anywhere is the Lotus Elise.
As far as a car that I actually intend to own (possibly getting ahold of one within the next year), I'm a BIG fan of the Toyota Prius. The safety ratings are high, the accessories are great, and the MPG is 51 on the highway and 61 in town. You cannot beat that.
