Students Rally For Civil Rights
Volume 75 Issue 16
Thursday, March 11, 2004
By Jolene Rivera, Copy Editor
Over a hundred SUNY New Paltz students and community members gathered in front of Humanities to rally in support of civil rights namely same-sex marriage last Thursday.
The event was sponsored by Queer Student Union, Social Change for Womyn, Voices of Planned Parenthood, Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance and Students Against Empire.
At 11:30 a.m Jason West joined the crowd who was gathering around James Fallirno, a junior at SUNY New Paltz, and co- executive chair of QSU. Fallirno, holding a mini-mega phone, playing a recording of "Here Comes the Bride" a tune that has been emanating and echoing in the New Paltz air Ñurged students walking to class to join the rally.
West who exchanged his suit and tie for a pair of jeans, a T-shirt and a baseball cap, addressed the students his comrades modestly.
"The whole hero thing is embarrassing," said West in response to his recent notary for marrying same-sex couples. "The real hero's are the thousands of people struggling for their equal rights. They are the hero's; the people we can't name."
West made sure to focus on the reasons for his decision to marry the couples, which was to uphold civil rights, equality for all, and the American constitution. "This is the largest flowering of a civil rights movement that this country has had in a generation," said West.
Despite the positive progress New Paltz has made with same-sex marriages West spoke of the opposition, which has begun to roll in. Conservative lawyers, the religious right and others from the opposing side of the issue, include Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church (located in Kansas) and Reverend Jerry Falwell of Liberty Counsel.
Fred Phelps and his conservative collation, whose slogan is "God hates fags," plan to rally in front of New Paltz churches on April 4-5 said West. He assured the crowd that he was harmless.
"[Phelps'colation] wants to come here and try to divide the community but our community is already united," said West. "In fact, if they do decide to come they will unite the town's people who are against us, because they will be disgusted by this hatred."
As for the Liberty Counsel, a conservative interest group based in Orlando, Fla. and tied to Reverend Jerry Falwell, a largely controversial religious figure, has filed two suits in the state Supreme Court, one which asks that West be removed from office.
West made it clear that marrying same- sex couples is not illegal. "No one has challenged the legality of the actual marriages," said West. "They are charging me for marrying people without actually giving out a marriage license."
West urges the officials who disagree with the marriages to re- read the constitution. "In my opinion the New York State Department of Health is violating the law by not allowing same-sex marriages," said West.
Also the Attorney General has had to recognize couples of same-sex marriages performed in other countries and who live in the US said West. "This is something the media had ignored. Because it is a loop hole."
SUNY New Paltz students agree that the marriages are legal and West was unjustly charged. Mike Cambell, freshman and English major at SUNY New Paltz said, "The charges on West are morally wrong. This country is inherently homophobic. I feel proud to be part of this the last frontier of civil rights. I am really wordless," said Cambell.
Meredith Karins, sophomore and sociology major at SUNY New Platz fears Bush's proposed amendment. "Bush's constitutional amendment would be unconstitutional and contradictory to civil rights," said Karins. "West is doing the right thing he is upholding the constitution."
After a long week of giving speeches in support of civil rights and same- sex marriages, West ended in urging the crowd to stay involved. "We need your help, write your representatives, your congressmen," said West "make this an issue, even when the media leaves. Stay united."
The Radical Cheerleaders performed several parody-like cheers jeering at Bush and cheering in support of West. Then the crowd, holding up signs and chanting, "we demand equal rights" moved towards the SUB.
John Agnelli, director of Student Activities stood outside the SUB and read an inspirational poem, "We will rise," in support of West and the same-sex marriage movement.
QSU had planned this march before West decided to perform same sex-marriages said Anurita Sharma, co-chair of QSU and student at SUNY New Paltz.
"We stand here today in support of equal rights and equal marriage of all people," said Sharma to the crowd. "We stand against the amendment that Bush supports and that would ban sex same marriage."
The crowd responded with an overwhelming and resounding, "I do."

Rev. Fred Phelps
(The Westboro Baptist Church, Topeka, KS -
Phelps gained national attention protesting at Matt Shepard's funeral)
Gays worthy of death
"Not only is homosexuality a sin, but anyone who supports fags is just as guilty as they are. You are both worthy of death (Romans 1:32)," Phelps quoted by State Press (Arizona State University), March 11, 1998.
God Hates Fags, Matt in Hell
Phelps and his church members protested at Matt Shepard's funeral, holding signs saying "God Hates Fags" and "Matt in Hell".
Jews are money-grubbing sodomites, gays solicit young to sodomy
"The Jews of Temple Beth Sholom are sinful, greedy, Hell-bound, money-grubbing sodomites; and they have dedicated their synagogue to be a gay and lesbian propaganda mill and recruiting depot, soliciting young people to sodomy." - Sept 7 1998, Westboro Baptist Church press release, re: protesting Jewish groups
Sodomite lifestyle guarantees hell
"It does not look good for Leni. WBC will picket his memorial service, using the occasion to warn the living that the sodomite lifestyle guarantees Hell. That the Kansas City Star Fag Rag writing tributes, and his fellow perverts dancing and singing in his honor, will not buy one drop of water to cool Leni's tongue where he likely now is. And except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Lk. 13:3" - Westboro Baptist Church press release, September 28, 1996, on the death of UMKC dancer Leni Wylliams.
Another fag dancer
"Here comes Leni...another fag dancer...they never learn." - - Westboro Baptist Church press release, September 28, 1996, on the death of UMKC dancer Leni Wylliams.
"Anal-copulating agenda of Topeka's filthy fag community"
"Rabbi Lawrence Karol is an apostate Jew, who denies the faith of his fathers, militantly promotes the anal-copulating agenda of Topeka's filthy fag community, and persecutes the Lord's people just as his vermin ancestors did in killing the Lord Jesus Christ and their own prophets and persecuting the apotles (sic) of Christ…..Hence they live filthy lives of sexual perversion, greed, violence, and oppression of the Lord's people. This is why the vile Jews of Temple Beth Sholom promote sodomy and persecute Baptists."- September 19, 1996 Westboro Baptist Church press release, re: anti-Jewish protest
Gays pose greatest threat to survival of nation
" ‘And Lot...pitched his tent toward Sodom. But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly.’ (Genesis 13:12,13) Conceiving the militant homosexual movement to pose the greatest threat to the survival of this nation, and that the government in all its branches (including the courts) is caving in to this anti-majoritarian law-trained pervert elite with their specious arguments couched in the inapposite language of civil rights law, and that the churches entoto are likewise crumbling to their junk theology and snake oil pitchman rhetoric which is nothing but heretical sophistry -- Westboro Baptist Church has determined to act. The Destroyer of Sodom is not dead. If the same conditions prevail, God's wrath will destroy America just as it did Sodom and Gomorrah in 1898 B.C. ‘Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind; it is abomination,’ Lev. 18:22, is still God's immutable law…..THE REAL CHURCH-BURNERS ARE FAGS!"- - June 30, 1996, Westboro Baptist Church press release.
F*****s
"….For nearly 4,000 years, since the ancient inhabitants of Sodom fueled the fires of God's wrath, sodomites have been called f*****s, contracted to fags. It is an elegant metaphor. F*****s in nature are sticks of wood that burn quick, hot and long, and are hence used to fuel the fires of nature. Etymology, history, and Scripture -- all endorse and sanctify the usage of f****t or fag to refer to sodomites, because the sodomites ignite the fires of divine wrath, promised by God Himself to destroy any society that elevates homosexuality to a position of wide acceptance and respect.’ " - June 30, 1996, Westboro Baptist Church press release. |

Sorry but I hate gays. Their like dysfunctional sexual human beings. Honest to god. Humans weren't created to be Homos. Neither was any animal on earth. The ones that do, only do by force or lack of females.
God, I don't understand how the hell you can be homosexual? I can see why dykes can be lesbos, women hate men half the time(mentally).. So be it. But gays? Men never hate on women.

| It's all a big scam. This guy and his group go around the country trying to piss people off with extreme rhetoric in the hopes that someone will open themselves up to a lawsuit. I don't even think they actually believe that . |

Err, sorry to break it to you - but humans weren't 'created' for any particular purpose. Why would you hate them? Furthermore, how are they dysfunctional?
As for the animal point, I believe there is some evidence that penguins and some other species have gay sex for pleasure.

Gay men aren't homosexual because they hate women. They don't have any choice in the matter. The general consensus is that it's probably biological and/or genetic, possibly with some environmental factors involved as well. Either way, asserting that they're like that because they 'hate on women' is misguided at best, and downright idiotic at worst.
And yes - before asserting that 'god hates fags' - it might be a good idea to actually present some reputable evidence to show that he actually exists first.
And yes, Fred Phelps is a first class wit. |
