1 point i should mention..... this new law will make it nice and clear when Tiesto gets here!!!....lol!!

You guys didn't read the law in detail though!...there's one more condition....

All establishments may have an un-enclosed, ventilated space, consisting of no more that 25% of the entire property for smokers to smoke in.

For now.....
The Highroller
and i'm tired of whiny non-smokers who for some reason have more of a say in the situation (even though they are a MINORITY in nightclubs) than the smokers (who are the majority of the club's clientelle).

oh, and aaron, don't immediately rebut my argument with the word "rhetoric" because i don't have any facts. i don't need any. you've been to afterhours clubs, and you KNOW that there are more smokers than non-smokers.

#1 FACT

CLub owners know their business more than anyone else and they are all saying it will harm business.

The best line in the whole article is this one:

If a great business opportunity was available in creating smoke-free venues, every anti-tobacco lobbyist would have started up their own establishment long ago.
Skipper
Graham we all know that there are a lot of smokers in the after hours scene. No one is disputing that.

however, those smokers will not quit having a social life b/c they can't smoke.

As with anything, they will either find a way to get around it or get used to it.

THAT is the reality of changes like this.

no one's interested :D

oh well, if there's no cigarettes, i guess i'm just going to have to resort to good ol dip (scholl's) :D

but i'm still going to try to smoke on the first friday!

The purpose of this law is to protect non-smokers.

That is WHY they have a say in the situation.

why else would smoking be banned?

In EVERY single jusridiction in North America where this has taken effect, nightclub business has decreased and has since never made it back to presmoking levels.

I dont know why people in Toronto think they are somehow different. This is going to devestate the already suffering clubscene in this city.

I wont even go into how disgusted i am at the nanny state our country is becoming...

not to mention the fact that drinking and driving incidents will go up as more people will resolve to drinking to kill the cravings

That's the ONLY thing that has me concerned :D

In addition to not having to breath that , yay for not getting burned by people's cigarettes when they walk by!

It's pretty sad that people on this forum would rather just run off at the mouth with unsubstantiated ramblings than actually hear a solid argument. But I can't say I'm surprised.

I'll post my essay in a separate thread later on for those who are actually interested in the reality of the situation (it's quite in-depth), so those who want to read it can read it, and those who think they can win an argument by saying the same things over and over again and raising their voices louder and louder can continue to post here and shout whatever they please.

Graham, I can't see any logic whatsoever in what you're posting. Obviously the smokers don't have a "say" in this, majority or not, because the bylaw is getting enacted for public health, not to cater to the every whim of clubbers. I didn't even know you smoked. When did you start that? Regardless, if 500 smokers stop coming to clubs because they can't smoke, 500 more non-smokers will take their place because they know they won't have to walk home with their eyes watering and their hair and clothes stinking like tar.
