Time for a bit of controlled debate methinks.
Do you pay for your tunes or not, discuss...

I voted for the top option, I only play legit stuff now. I do have Mp3s on my computer however, mostly for evaluation purposes.

Same. I think mp3s are all fine and good if they're only for home listening purposes but one should never play them live. Unless of course it's an amateur production or something. |

| Most of the stuff I spin is MP3. If I ever start making money DJing, i'll put all that money (or most of it) into music. I will buy the real CDs mainly for the better sound quality and because it's cool owning the actual CD, and I like cover art. I DJ out of my room and on the internet right now and I couldn't care less if people hate on downloaded music. If I wouldn't be spinning MP3s I wouldn't be spinning at all. Survival > Music |

I think, A DJ should promote the kind of music he plays. If you download the music, you're not supporting the scene at all. Besides, it's very lame to play illegal MP3's in a set.
But I do download MP3's, simply for evaluation. If I like the song, I'll buy it, if I don't like it, I won't buy it but I won't listen to it anymore either. That's why I don't think downloading mp3's for evaluation purposes is a problem. |

i didnt have a clue what i was doing i just knew i loved trance music... i even go to the guy 'whats a slip mat? is it like a carpet for underneath the turntable to make it not slip'
rofl i dont even have a job, im only 17.. man how the fek did that work out.. some was probably birthday n christmas money seeing as they both feel between then and now.. and iv played out once which was a favour for free

Downloaded music has a place, it is for evaluating singles and also an excellent medium for distributing DJ sets, bootlegs etc. It's good to hear that you will buy the real CDs, and you will put most of the money you get paid to DJ into those CDs. But, i don't think you realize how little money is in the DJing business. You'll get free entrance to clubs, drinks, maybe even entrance and drinks for your friends, but it will be a long time before you make money doing it if ever.
And once you do, what you will make will be enough for doing a set to buy maybe 5 CDs. Of course, there is the chance you will become the next Paul Oakenfold, but it's a very slim chance (not judging your skills, it's just there is a lot of competition)
You say Survival > Music? I say the Survival of the Underground Music industry is more important than your being able to spin with downloaded tunes.
You say if you weren't able to spin downloaded tracks, you wouldn't be able to spin. Well, if i wasn't able to drive a porsche, because i couldn't steal one, then guess what, i wouldn't drive one! If you can't afford to buy music, you can't afford to be a DJ, period.
If all the bedroom DJs that never play out, or even the just starting to play out ones that get paid peanuts never bought records, the industry would be in the toilet (even worse than it is now) |

Well I only play music on my decks so all the music I play on them is legit.
I have alot of mp3's on my pc but that's just for evaluating.
Is a song worth it (mailinglists of stores) then I buy it on vinyl or try to. |

same here, back in the day when i first started i download music to play in my bedroom but once i found out that you can actually find some dance music on cd-singles, my djing w/ stole music pretty much stopped. now i have a set of turntables and a major addiction to vinyl. i still buy the odd cd-single and download live sets, and songs to evaluate. |
