how about christian extremist?

I think it is kinda obvious how the name came about through history. How the euros knew nothign of the americas, they land here, call it america, then it changes hands a few times, gets split up into states...and so on and so forth.

:conf:

:p

Not exactly. Maybe if it was the United Kingdom of Europe. Then the comparison might follow. But it's the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Maybe "Stater" would do?

No. One of the official names of Mexico is "United States of Mexico", so you can see that "stater" wouldn't really be specific enough.

To me "American" makes sense. The term is derived from the name of the country, and it doesn't really conflict with anything else. The enormity of the North America and South America as a whole is much too large for "American" to be a practical term for someone from either continent. "North American" and "South American" work well enough, and aren't too confusingly separated from "American".

i mean, people in sweden are swedish, people in england are english, people in germany are germans, but people in USA are, americans? :wtf: that just make no sense, i mean there are A LOT of people living in america that doesn't live in the USA... there are even two amercas, a north, and a south....

there is no better word for it in swedish either, but i find it kinda strange, but USAies or something just don't fit :p

please tell me that there is some proper word that sounds okay :p

You are an American if you are born in the US or if you have become a citizen of the US. It's no different than someone from the US living overseas. They would still be an "American living overseas". If someone moved to the US that was from Germany they would still be German. If somone simply lived in the US for work, but didn't support what the country stood for and was resistent to the culture I doubt that they would consider themself to be an American. So why even question that? There are people everywhere that weren't born and raised in the country that they are currently living in. The majority of the people living in the US are Americans.

I'm not sure I follow the North and South bit. North, South, East, West...? Point being? It's all still the United States. That's like saying time zones should make a difference. :conf: Any COUNTRY outside of the actual UNITED STATES is another country.

American is the proper word.

"Yankees" is an expression that Americans use to describe people up north on the East cost. Other countries have adopted it, but it really makes no sense when they use it to describe everyone in the US. Someone born and raised in Alabama is not a Yankee...regardless of living in the US. People from New York would laugh at that! ;)

Amerikos...interesting.

:D
mndeg

Why would they laugh? Are they ashamed of the people in their own country?

No...not at all! ;)

People in New York are considered to be more fast paced. Most of them have strong northern accents. They are more likely to live in the city. ETC. People in Alabama...most of them have strong southern accents...a drawl if you will. They are more laid back. They are more likely to live in the country. It's just night and day. Of course you have a mixture everywhere but I'm just giving an example of some of the differences that one might find.

Yes... we call ourselves Americans. Why? Because we live in the United States of AMERICA.

We also might use our state of residence to identify ourselves. I would typically refer to myself as A Texan. Because I'm from Texas.

You people are idiots.

The above statement might have been mean... but DAMN. You're makin my head hurt.

well dude, America consists of lots of countries, one up north from us and several south.
it is like what was stated before, if one country in europe, say sweden, decided to say their nationality was "european"
problem is we are just a mix of people with nationalities from everywhere.

we have the rejects from europe, whats left of the native american indians, including the tribes up north and all the aztecs, incas, and mayans down south, and all the africans we brought over as slaves, and then all of them interbred and made hybrid peoples

all the other countries who succeeded from europe made it easy by picking a name for their country that made it easy to distinguish them.
us "americans" decided to use the name United States of America, and the only short derivative youcan use of that name is American

but whatever, just call us Gringos
