I wanna build up my HipHop collection and knowledge.
i'm tired of mixing just house and proggy trance.
i want to get a nice collection of trip hop, funk, hip hop, and so forth.
just wandering if some people who have a good knowledge of hip hop can help me out with some artists to check out and some essentail albums.
when i say hip hop i don't mean hip pop (ja rule, ludacris, eminem etc..)
i'd like to check out some old school hip hop, before rap as a definate genre came about.
so if you can, just shoot out some albums, artists i should check out.
thanks

(also any penis's who want to post antihiphopetc.. hate or useless , i'm not listening so don't waste the ATP molecules needed to make your fingers move to type a response)

First of all IMO it's great to be diverse in your DJ'ing. There's definetly some cool hip hop out there...it's just that people are turned off to hip hop all together when they hear like Ja Rule. I don't know too much good hip hop but I do suggest you check out stuff from Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Biggie, and last but not least 2pac. People will surely know their records if you play them so it's a good start. The next step would be to find some good underground stuff that people won't know but it'll blow them away.
ASOT100
check out Eminem - Global Underground 027

yeah I know Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg
never really listend to Biggie
but yeah its the underground stuff that i really want to get into
TwoPlow
DJ Shadow
DJ Krush
RJD2
Prefuse 73 (He gets pretty experimental.)
The Roots
Jurassic 5
Outkast
Dr. Octagon

"Cannibal Ox - The F Word (RJD2 Instrumental Remix)" is one of the best songs I've ever heard. If you can find a store that has it on vinyl, and more than one copy; Drop me a line ;) "Sugar Hill Gang - Rappers Delight" is a classic. "Def Tex ft. Ty & Huntkillbury Finn - Rock The Beat" is a pretty good song. "RJD2 - Let The Good Times Roll pt. 2" is also good.

That's all I got off the top of my head.

Kool Keith and his productions as Dr. Octagon and with Ice-T as the Analog Brothers.

NWA (alot of people hate their productions because of their antagonistic lyrics):

100 Miles and Runnin'
Express Yourself
Tha Police

NWA is more mainstream but 100 Miles and Runnin' is a song in which its impossible to stand still when you're listening to it.

Check out the listing on this cd here, I don't own it but am familiar with some of these artists: they are all great

RJD2 is brilliant.

My favorite MCs are Sage Francis, Rakim, and definitely Biggie (even if he's not underground, he'll always be the best).

For production quality check out The Gorillaz and anything in the Ninja Tune label:

There's a huge leap from hip hop to trip hop, but if you're also interested in aciddy jazz trippity hop check out: Massive Attack, Thievery Corporation, Pre-fuse 73, Shadow.

For downtempo and broken beats i recommend: Peace Orchestra, Osunlade, John Beltran, 4 Hero, John Arnold, Alexkid, 2 Banks of 4.
Lira
Old-school Hip hop? I like "Run DMC - Down with the kind" (I don't know what album it's from though... and maybe you should check Afrika Bambaata, which is the godfather of hip hop (although he actually produces electro :p).

edit: "Del the Funky Homosapien" is also nice, "Phoney Phranchise" being my favourite tune :)
Konijn Island
for underground indy stuff:
Immortal Technique
Mr. Voodoo/Natural Elements
L-Swift
Definitive Jux -- you may want to cop Company Flow's Funcrusher Plus
Mr. Metaphor is pretty good live
Dojomaster26
Check out some stuff from Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Great early 80s funk.

Radagast
