How can we improve trance in Melbourne? (pg. 2)
View this Thread in Original format

First off I don't want to give the impression that I'm against Melbourne's more underground rave scene with Nrg and Hardcore sounds. Don't get me wrong, I love these events and go to as many as I can.

But I think you are right.. either the trance scene is not promoted well enough or its not understood well enough but I don't think the scene isn't getting the support is deserves from lack of willing clubbers.

I normally wouldn't bash other genre's of music but I'm going to have to break my rule. Urban music.. I can't stand it. Its just the general attitude of the place.. the culture I find promotes guy's with attitude problems who are there to compensate for something by asserting themselves. Also the obsession on image, people dance to be watched and its really sad I think (which is another reason I like the underground scene... no one gives a toss what the others around them are doing.. so long as everyone is enjoying themselves)

But certainly the events are out there if you can find them. I myself have been able to attend far more trance events having joined the TA forums.. simply because I know about them. So I think the root of the problem is promotion, but I'm not a marketing guy so I can't really suggest a solution but the people are out there.. they just have to be told where to go.

(sorry for blabering on for so long.. It's a bad habbit of mine   )

We had a thread similar to this in regards to Sydney a while back.

It sux that trance seems to be dying a bit, but I think it will pick up again.

My theory is that trance was big a few years ago, but now those people have gotten older and are out of the scene.

The majority of people at the moment are into house/hard music, and these people are younger and are yet to develop their love of trance. ( I didn't love trance til a few years ago and I'm 26 now)

Give it time, I think things may change (man I hope so) and also I don't think the Melbourne trance scene is bad, in fact I think it's pretty good, the only thing that could be better is the TA community, you guys should be close like us Sydney Wigga Posse.:) ;) :stongue:

i think alot of the people who are into the house and prog scene (the typical 'room' goers) seem to be fixated with this mentality too.

fortunately we have a place such as room, which gives the trance community a location to party really well, and i much prefer this environment, then say a previously used club called Viper.

look the problem in melbs is that the sheep element of dance music is not following to real trance events. Nobody has enough money to lose putting on big nights every week

I'd say it's not what's wrong with melbourne, butmore what could be improved on. There is good support, just look at the crowds the big internationals pull when they come out... there are people there that want to hear good trance. But it seems they only go out to hear 'known' dj's.. where'as most of us in the scene and on forums like this know that the locals are playing just as good a sets as any of the internationals. It seems not many people get onto the forums, read the street press, etc. Otherwise they'd know that there is some good trance about. It's only big budget advertising that is going to work, and most small crews cant afford this.

On the other side of this, I think the younger or 'new' clubbers have been sucked into the nrg and house scene's. Those new clubber who want to call themselves ravers, have gone straight to nrg. While the rest have gone to house music to dance with all the 'beautifull' people because they want to be 'seen'. In a generalising comment, i'm gonna say that far too many young people these days seem totally obsessed with either being cool and trying to look better than anyone else, or trying to rebel and fk themsleves up and think that by dancing to jackhammer music all night and sipping G is gonna make life enjoyable..

Just as well the few of us here know better.

trance died in 1916.

seriously though, the community in vic need to support each other and the events more.

it's all about the PLUR.

You guys have it better down there than we do .. between Rush, Halcyon, ANOT and internationals we basically only get an event every 2 weeks or so, whereas Melbourne seems to have stuff pretty much weekly.

I don't know that the scene is as bad as you say it is, when I was down there in January the clubs I went to were packed full of people going off, whereas trance events in Sydney are becoming synonymous with closing early due to lack of numbers (and not enough people buying alcohol, but that's another story).

And no offense, but it clearly has been a long time since you've been to Sublime :) Very very little uplifting there these days, it's mostly Nik Fish & Bexta style bang-bang-bang (the sound of panelbeating a car was how Sample Gee described it), while other DJs like Mark Dynamix have moved on into prog, tech-house, breaks and funk.

Not a lament (or a eulogy) for the Sydney scene, just general observations :)

It amazes me that the trance playing internationals are pulling the crowds they are and yet where are those fantastic numbers in the weekly club nights.

As I said I'm not at all opposed to hard dance, or those that go to it but how the f_ck are so many hard dance nights so big and so full every weekend?

Maybe we just aren't offering enough "trance played hard" to accomodate those that like it a bit tougher.

I have noticed melbourne has some ing brilliant dj's in their own right, but so many seem to play their own genres the same as the next guy.

I was at sublime last year. And alot of my mates still go every week.
I made the point based on sublime from a while a go. I also said that i knew it wasnt the case any more. last time I was there it was very much as u say but there was still a definate element of trance in it, jumping jack dropping paul van dyk's angel was highlight of that. But I'll be there july 9 so will be good to see again how far backward it's gone. (hope not to far because I used to love that place)

Yeah but Jumping Jack is the only one of the Sublime DJs that would even think about dropping trance, the others would rather play funky house than trance. JJ has played some top notch trance sets this year, the highlight was his warmup for Armin van Buuren. But of course he has to play much harder at Sublime than he'd like....

can somebody tell me how in gods name jumping jack got 21 on itm top 50?????!!!! he is by far the most talented and consistent trance dj I have ever heard in Australia. would u all agree?
